This includes work to identify and respond to the diverse and evolving threat to our democracies from information manipulation. We work closely with countries across Europe to develop effective national security responses to FIMI; enable communication activities to challenge information manipulation; and support independent media and civil society organisations to build resilience to disinformation. Collaboration with international partners, including in the EU, is an essential part of countering these risks. Through the UK's Defending Democracy Ministerial Taskforce, FCDO officials have engaged with partners, including Austria, Romania, and France, to share best practice and identify opportunities for future joint work to build resilience against interference in our democratic processes. FCDO regularly updates to the Taskforce's Ministerial meetings on key risks, learnings, and responses from international elections to inform the UK's election preparations. In the first month of 2024, China represented c.6% of all UK steel imports in volume terms.</p><p>We recognise that global economic conditions continue to be challenging for the steel industries across the globe.</p><p>This is why we have put in place a robust trade remedies framework to provide appropriate protection for domestic industries, including steel, against surges of imports and unfair practices. We publish comprehensive Official Statistics every quarter about the decisions we make on licence applications including processing times. This data is available at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/strategic-export-controls-licensing-data.</p><p>As of 12 March 2024, the processing of export licence applications was being delivered by 48.61 full-time equivalent (FTE) officials within the Department for Business and Trade. However, some destinations remain more challenging and will take longer to complete as we continue to maintain our robust export controls regime.</p><p>ECJU has an ongoing programme of Continuous Improvement and we routinely identify and implement opportunities to make targeted improvements to the way we operate and manage the export licensing service to help us adapt to the changing demands on the system.</p><p>ECJU is also in the process of rolling out its new digital export licensing system, LITE, which will provide a modern digital service that streamlines the export licence application process and supports decision-making through effective use of data.
