star this property answer text
The implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol is currently presenting very significant challenges for people and businesses in Northern Ireland. These include trade disruption and diversion, significant costs and bureaucracy for traders and areas where people in Northern Ireland have not been able to benefit fully from the same advantages as those in the rest of the United Kingdom.

The Northern Ireland Protocol has impacted on the supply of Kosher and other products for religious observance to Northern Ireland, as traditional suppliers in Great Britain have not been willing to engage with the bureaucratic processes required under the Northern Ireland Protocol.

It’s our preference to resolve the issues with the Northern Ireland Protocol through talks and the Government is engaging in constructive dialogue with the EU to find solutions to these problems. However, we are proceeding with legislation, which aims to fix the practical problems the Northern Ireland Protocol has created.

One of the key things this proposed legislation would do is to create a “green channel” for goods moving and staying within the UK - so the movement of kosher and other religious products would not be subject to the complex rules with which suppliers are currently having to deal.

In the meantime, UK Government Ministers have engaged extensively with the Jewish community in Northern Ireland to understand the challenges they face and officials have been working closely with the community to enable them to access the products they require.

This will provide a more effective approach and ensure that the Police Service of Northern Ireland and GB police forces are able to focus their capabilities on addressing contemporary policing challenges.

That does not mean that all Troubles-related criminal investigations will cease. The Bill makes clear that the ICRIR will have all the necessary policing powers, with attendant coercive investigative measures, to conduct full, police-equivalent criminal investigations, more than capable of meeting the requirements of the UK’s international obligations.
more like this

star this property answer text
The Windsor Framework protects and strengthens Northern Ireland’s place in our Union and this will be reinforced by the changes we are making to domestic legislation.

As well as ensuring goods available on the shelves in Great Britain are able to move freely to Northern Ireland, the agreement safeguards Northern Ireland’s place in the UK internal market through agreements on medicines, VAT and State aid.

The agreement ensures that Northern Ireland will benefit from the same VAT and alcohol taxes as apply in the rest of the United Kingdom.

With the agreement, we have restored sovereignty by putting the people of Northern Ireland in charge and eliminating the democratic deficit.

Northern Ireland’s businesses have access not only to the UK market, but also to the European single market and the agreement provides Northern Ireland with excellent opportunities for economic growth. In so doing it supports the prosperity of both Northern Ireland and the whole of the UK.

As Tony Blair recently noted, political stability is the best way to protect the union between Northern Ireland and Great Britain and by fixing the problems with the Protocol and restoring the delicate balance inherent in the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement, we have provided a sound basis for Northern Ireland to move forward economically and politically as an integral and prosperous part of the United Kingdom.
