Iran does not recognise dual nationality and therefore does not permit access to British-Iranian detainees. We are committed to ensuring that we do everything we can, including continuing to press the Iranian authorities for consular access. The Prime Minister raised his concerns about dual national detentions with President Rouhani on 24 September, and the Foreign Secretary did so with Foreign Minister Zarif on 17 September. Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon hosted an event at the UN General Assembly on 25 September to call out the failings of the Iranian judiciary. star this property answer text
In any individual case, the Government will look at all the circumstances concerned. This includes consideration of the International Convention Against the Taking of Hostages 1979. The Convention expressly addresses situations in which an individual commits the offence of hostage-taking; it does not define the circumstances in which a State could be responsible for hostage-taking. In considering whether or not someone is a hostage under the Convention, the UK will have regard to the definition of hostage-taking at Article 1 and the exemption for offences which take place wholly within a State in which both the hostage and perpetrator are nationals of that State.

In considering what action to take to assist a British national overseas, the Government will always take into account any relevant international law obligations and UK policy. Our public guidance sets out that the UK can provide consular support to British nationals detained by foreign governments outside the UK including making early contact, notifying family and friends on request and offering information about the local legal system. The guidance makes clear that we cannot get people out of prison or detention, however we will consider approaching local authorities if an individual is not treated in line with internationally-accepted standards.

star this property answer text
The UK wants Egypt to succeed as a stable, prosperous and democratic country. The UK-Egypt relationship is important and spans a wide range of fields, from foreign policy, to trade and investment, economic reform, education, and healthcare. British companies continue to be one of the largest sources of foreign direct investment into Egypt. The Government works closely with the Egyptian authorities to counter shared threats from terrorism, to promote the safety and security of over 450,000 British citizens who visit Egypt each year, and to support longer-term reform. A close relationship enables us to register concerns where we have them, for example on human rights. British Ministers regularly meet their Egyptian counterparts. I visited Cairo last month for discussions on a wide range of bilateral issues.
more like this

star this property answer text
We regularly raise with the Egyptian authorities the human rights of religious minorities, and make the case for them to be accorded the necessary protections under Egyptian law. President Sisi has called for peaceful co-existence between religious communities in Egypt, has licensed over one thousand churches under the Church Building Law, and has opened the largest cathedral in the Middle East and North Africa. During my visit to Cairo on 15 September, I met Pope Tawadros II, whose Coptic Orthodox Church plays such an important part in Egyptian society. The UK has always been clear that the rights of minorities, wherever they exist, should be protected in line with international standards. I look forward to discussing these issues with the Hon. Member for Gillingham and Rainham, whom the Prime Minister has appointed as his new Envoy for Freedom of Religion and Belief.
more like this
