	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 03/02/2016 answer text <p>Public Health England (PHE) and the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) have been carefully monitoring the Zika virus outbreak in the Americas since it was first reported in Brazil during May 2015. PHE has reviewed evidence on the transmission of Zika virus and PHE mosquito experts have provided advice to Government and the public that neither the main vector of Zika virus <em>Aedes aegypti</em>, nor other species of <em>Aedes</em> mosquitoes, including <em>Aedes albopictus</em>, that may have the potential to transmit this virus, are established in the United Kingdom.</p><p> </p><p>The risk to the UK population is related to travel to countries where Zika virus outbreaks are currently ongoing, and NaTHNaC and PHE have published updated advice for travellers to South and Central America and the Caribbean, including specific advice for pregnant women. The risk of onward spread within the UK is very low and PHE has again provided this advice to government, and the public.</p><p> </p><p>PHE has also been working with appropriate professional groups to develop information and guidance on Zika for clinicians. This advice can be accessed through the PHE website and has been cascaded by organisations such as the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.</p><p> </p><p>Together with the Royal College of General Practitioners PHE has developed guidance specifically targeted at primary care which will be available shortly. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 10/02/2016 answer text <p>The United Kingdom pharmaceutical industry will play a leading role in the development of a vaccine for the Zika virus, in collaboration with a range of the UK’s infectious disease experts, who are world leaders in this area.</p><p> </p><p>In the Spending Review, the £1 billion Ross Fund, run jointly by the Department of Health and Department for International Development, includes over £350 million for the development of new vaccines, drugs and diagnostics for infectious diseases.</p><p> </p><p>Particularly noteworthy within this, the UK Vaccine Network, with up to £120 million of funding, brings together industry, academia and Government to finance the development of new vaccines for priority infectious diseases with epidemic potential, including Zika. There is no evidence to suggest that the mosquitos that are known to carry Zika are established in the United Kingdom or could survive in our climate and therefore the risk to the UK population from Zika is very low. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 05/02/2016 answer text <p>In the United Kingdom, testing for Zika virus is carried out in the Public Health EnglandRare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory at Porton Down. In the event of a positive result, the clinicians caring for the patient are informed immediately, as well as local Public Health officials. The clinicians will be referred to the national guidance for further advice on management and follow-up. The majority of people (roughly 80%) infected do not have symptoms. For those with symptoms, <a href="http://ecdc.europa.eu/en/publications/_layouts/forms/Publication_DispForm.aspx?List=4f55ad51-4aed-4d32-b960-af70113dbb90&amp;ID=1413" target="_blank">Zika virus generally causes a mild, short-lived (2 to 7 days) illness</a>.</p><p> </p><p>In the case of a pregnant woman, the guidance suggests referral to a fetal medicine service for further assessment, including an ultrasound scan.
