star this property answer text <p>The Ministry of Justice is responsible for the legislative framework governing the regulation of legal services in England and Wales. The position is different in both Scotland and Northern Ireland.</p><p> </p><p>The direct regulation of the legal profession is independent of Government and the Ministry of Justice does not directly handle complaints about barristers and solicitors. star this property answer text <p>The Ministry of Justice is responsible for the legislative framework governing the regulation of legal services in England and Wales. However, the direct regulation of the legal profession is independent of Government.</p><p>The Legal Services Act 2007 established that the regulation of the legal profession in England and Wales is to be undertaken by approved regulators, such as the General Council of the Bar, the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives and the Law Society of England &amp; Wales, with the oversight of the Legal Services Board. The 2007 Act also requires that an approved regulator’s regulatory functions are exercised independently of its representative functions.</p><p>There are also several other Acts of Parliament, such as Solicitors Act 1974 and the Courts and Legal Services Act 1990 which provide these bodies with certain powers, duties and functions to effectively regulate the legal profession.</p> more like this

Her Majesty’s Courts &amp; Tribunals Service (HMCTS) agrees the number of sitting days for each Crown Court with the judiciary on an annual basis which is then periodically reviewed in response to demand. However we recognise crowding is an issue and in 2016-17 the average percentage of prisoners in crowded accommodation was 24.5%.</p><p>Our reforms will see us close down and redevelop ageing prisons and deliver high-quality, modern establishments fit for today's demands. Our new prison estate will have up to 10,000 modern prison places that create the physical conditions for Governors to achieve better educational, training and rehabilitation outcomes.</p><p>Reducing overcrowding is a central aim of the estate modernisation and the new prisons will be designed with this in firmly in mind.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>From 1 January 2015 to 30 September 2016 the number and proportion of appeals listed and disposed of taking more than 12 months was 24,319 (20%) in the First-tier Tribunal and 714 (5%) in the Upper Tribunal.</p><p>HM Courts and Tribunals Service does everything it can to avoid unnecessary delay in the Immigration and Asylum Chamber and has provided an additional 4,950 tribunal sitting days for this financial year to reduce caseloads.</p> more like this

We will however be monitoring arrangements in DWP with a view to determining whether MoJ should develop such a policy as part of its wider wellbeing strategy. MoJ is also in the process of implementing a new cross-government benefits platform which in addition to providing access to salary sacrifice benefits and discounts on goods and services also provides staff with information to raise financial awareness.</p> more like this
