This Government has pressed for better information for consumers during negotiations relating to food labelling in Europe.</p><p> </p><p>Food businesses are ultimately responsible for ensuring their products' safety and accurate labelling. However, Government departments and agencies back this up with more than 80,000 risk-based checks per year.In addition, Defra develops validated testing methods under its Food Authenticity Programme to check whether a product has been mislabelled or contaminated. Most food for sale in the UK is labelled with the country of origin and producers are developing labelling to show the provenance of their food whether it is local to the community in which it is sold or made in Britain. The Government Food Strategy announced the Food Data Transparency Programme (FDTP) to address this.</p><p>The FDTP will develop consistent and defined metrics to objectively measure the health, environmental sustainability and animal welfare impacts of food, by providing access to rich, standardised, high-quality data so that the Government can track progress towards our shared health and environmental goals in order to make effective policy.</p><p>We will work with stakeholders to create a common framework of metrics which the food and drink industry must follow when making voluntary information to consumers regarding their foods emission and sustainability claims.</p><p>This mandatory methodology will be for participating companies to consistently follow, providing a common standard where eco-information is voluntarily used should they choose to include such information on their products.</p><p>No decisions have yet been made on the metrics to include in the guidance. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 21/06/2023 answer text <p>All food businesses are under a legal obligation to provide information on the presence of the 14 major allergens in food, including in the non-prepacked sector, such as in restaurants and cafes, so that people who have allergies and intolerances are able to make safe food choices. Current requirements state that for food items provided in restaurants, allergen information must be clearly signposted and can be provided in writing or verbally.</p><p>The Food Standards Agency (FSA), who has policy responsibility for food safety, is currently considering how to improve the provision of information for people with allergies and researching different approaches for the provision of written and verbal information to improve the accuracy and communications of allergen information. The FSA has recently commissioned several pieces of research in this area. These will provide new evidence on the nature and extent of food hypersensitivity reactions, different international approaches to written information, and the business operating models of small and micro businesses in the non-prepacked sector. These reports will be published in due course and will be presented to the FSA Board to consider next steps.</p><p>Additionally, the FSA has conducted a study visit to the Republic of Ireland to understand the practical implementation of their legislation mandating written allergen information and a workshop with key stakeholders. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 23/02/2024 answer text <p>All food sold in the UK must comply with food labelling rules, which include the requirement for specific information to be presented in a specific way. These rules require that a food label on pre-packed foods must show:</p><p>the name of the food;</p><p>a list of ingredients;</p><p>the net quantity of the food and the quantity of certain ingredients used;</p><p>ingredients causing allergies or intolerances;</p><p>a best before or use by date;</p><p>any special storage conditions and/or conditions of use;</p><p>the name and address of the food business operator;</p><p>instructions for use where necessary, and</p><p>a nutrition declaration.</p><p>Country of origin information is already required for fresh and frozen meat of beef, sheep, goat, pigs and poultry, as well as for uncut fresh fruit and vegetables, honey, olive oil and wine. For all other prepacked food, origin is required where its omission would be misleading to consumers. Food labelling rules require that accurate origin information must be displayed with many foods, including fresh and frozen meat. If a food business operator fails to provide mandatory information, or provides information that is misleading (including provenance information) they will be served with an improvement notice.
