answer text
The UK has world-leading standards of food information backed by a rigorous legislative framework. Following EU withdrawal, we have committed to reviewing food labelling laws to ensure that consumers’ confidence in the food they buy continues to grow.

We are currently conducting a review of allergen labelling, which is looking at ways to improve the provision of allergen information for prepacked for direct sale food products. We recently ran a UK wide consultation jointly with the Food Standards Agency in England, Northern Ireland and Wales, and Food Standards Scotland. We are now in the process of analysing the responses we received in order to determine how allergen labelling can be improved for food products which are prepacked for direct sale so that consumers have complete trust in those foods.
more like this

answer text
The consultation on allergen information provisions, which closed on Friday 29 March, was a joint UK wide consultation between Defra, the Foods Standards Agency in England, Northern Ireland and Wales, and Food Standards Scotland. As food labelling is a devolved issue, the decision to run the consultation across the whole of the United Kingdom was dependent upon the support and involvement of the devolved administrations. Throughout the process, Defra officials have been working closely with officials from Food Standards Scotland and the Food Standards Agency.

Looking to the future, we will continue to work closely with the devolved administrations to ensure that all UK consumers have complete trust in the food they consume.
more like this

answer text
Negotiations with the EU are currently restricted to the withdrawal deal. The status of UK food products in the EU market will depend on the outcome of those negotiations.

Following a consultation exercise with the food industry, discussions with the European Commission, and agreement with Defra, the final design for the new health and ID marks has been agreed. This will ensure the UK continues to have the ability to export products of animal origin to the EU. We are also aiming to be recognised by the EU as having equivalence to organic standards and establish reciprocal arrangements though at present there is no agreement on this.

Leaving the EU with a deal remains the Government’s top priority. As a responsible Government would, we are accelerating no deal preparations to ensure the country is prepared for every eventuality. Businesses and citizens should ensure they are similarly prepared.

more like this
