The carriers are strategic maritime platforms which will perform a wide variety of military functions; for example: providing credible conventional deterrence; delivering carrier strike missions using Lightning II aircraft; enforcing no fly zones; deploying Royal Marine Commandos; building international partnerships; delivering humanitarian aid and disaster relief; and conducting complex non-combatant evacuation operations.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Military assistance in Colombia has been provided over many years and the issue of human rights is closely examined before any military assistance to Colombia is approved. The UK has provided expertise and advice to the Colombian Armed Forces on the subjects of international humanitarian law and human rights during military operations at a number of seminars and conferences.<br><br>My right hon. Friend the previous Foreign Secretary (William Hague) raised the issue of human rights with President Santos and Defence Minister Pinzon in February. He welcomed the Colombian Government’s commitment to zero tolerance of human rights abuses and underlined the importance of taking action on threats to human rights defenders and trade unionists. My right hon. Friend the Minister for Latin America Affairs, (Hugo Swire) also raised human rights with the Colombian Government during his visit to Colombia in June.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <table><tbody><tr><td colspan="2" rowspan="5"> </td><td colspan="6" rowspan="5"><p>As at 28 October 2014 there were around 155 UK military personnel serving in Gibraltar in Headquarters British Forces Gibraltar, the Royal Naval Gibraltar Squadron, and Windmill Hill Signal Station providing a range of enabling functions. A further 705 Ministry of Defence UK-based and locally employed civilian personnel provide support services to Defence operations, including 95 serving in the Gibraltar Defence Police. Additionally, the Royal Gibraltar Regiment comprises 226 full-time and 166 reserve personnel. The role of these assets collectively is to provide for the security and territorial integrity of Gibraltar and British Gibraltar Territorial Waters, and to enable the maintenance of Gibraltar as a forward mounting base for UK military operations. In addition, personnel from the Royal Gibraltar Regiment deploy on UK military operations.</p></td></tr></tbody></table> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Defence Cultural Specialist Unit is not a training establishment and therefore does not offer any courses in the generally accepted use of the term. Its role is to prepare and provide Cultural Specialists and Human Terrain Analysts for units at readiness or deploying on operations. The Unit works with a variety of organisations, including the Defence Centre for Language and Culture at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, to ensure that its personnel are appropriately trained to meet the UK's commitments.</p><p>After the completion of appropriate language training, which also includes elements of cultural and historical learning, a Cultural Specialist will receive, on average, between 3-5 weeks of cultural and historical training specific to their future role.</p><p>Since the Defence Cultural Specialist Unit was formed in 2010, 59 personnel have spent more than six months undertaking related studies. These are provided at a range of locations, including the Defence Centre for Language and Culture at the Defence Academy. As at 30 October 2014 the Unit had seven personnel undertaking cultural and historical training.</p>
