star this property answer text <p>In 2015-2016, the Department ran three competitions for academy sponsors to apply for the Northern Fund. The Northern Fund is designed to support the expansion of sponsors in some of the most challenging regions of the country in terms of school performance and rural and urban deprivation. The funding enables sponsors to increase their capacity to take on and improve underperforming schools.</p><p>A total of 85 applications were received by the third and final competition deadline of 22 February 2016.
