star this property answer text
The Department for Education believes that improving the quality of teaching in literacy and numeracy is crucial to building the foundation for future study and work. The Government has revised the national curriculum and set more rigorous and challenging content in English and mathematics to match the highest performing countries around the world. The new programmes of study for English and maths will challenge pupils to realise their potential in an increasingly competitive global market.

The new maths GCSE will have more content, be more challenging and – alongside English - will be double weighted in school performance tables. The Department has recently allocated £11 million to fund <del class="ministerial">over</del> 32 new maths hubs to support a more challenging maths GCSE to improve the quality of maths education. This initiative, which includes a teacher exchange programme with Shanghai, will enable every school and college in England, from early years to the post-16 sector, to access locally-tailored support in all areas of maths teaching and learning.

The new national curriculum for English places a greater emphasis on reading and requires pupils to study a range of books, poems and plays.

The national curriculum for English will give teachers greater flexibility and freedom which will help to raise standards and expectations for all pupils. It has been significantly slimmed down and will free up teachers to use their professional judgement to design curricula that meet the needs of their pupils.

The new English language GCSE will place greater demands on pupils and has more emphasis on those skills demanded by employers. The new English literature GCSE will build on this foundation, and encourage students to read, write and think critically.

Design and Technology (D&T) is compulsory for all maintained schools from key stages 1 to 3 and the new D&T curriculum, which will be in force from September 2014, strengthens the requirements on schools to teach about food at primary and secondary. At primary, the curriculum will ensure pupils are taught about healthy eating, where food comes from and to prepare and cook a range of dishes. At secondary, for the first time, cooking will be compulsory at key stage 3: teachers will be also required to cover nutrition, diet and where food comes from.
more like this

star this property answer text
We have developed the Online Free School Meal Eligibility Checking Service (ECS), which is a system that allows local authority users to undertake record checks from one central point. The ECS allows local authorities to check data held by the Department for Work and Pensions, the Home Office and Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs in order to establish eligibility for free school meals (FSM). The ECS has been extended to allow parents to check their own eligibility, and to apply online, for FSM. The new system reduces the time, stigma and bureaucracy previously associated with applications for FSM, therefore encouraging more parents to register their children for a free school lunch.

Resources are also available from the Children's Food Trust at http://www.childrensfoodtrust.org.uk/ to help schools increase take-up of free school meals.

From September 2014, all children in reception, year 1 and year 2 attending state-funded schools will be eligible for a free school lunch, regardless of parental circumstances.

star this property answer text
The Government is committed to supporting schools in recruiting specialist teachers in chemistry. Specific support is provided for individuals interested in teaching chemistry through targeted marketing, personal advisors and securing school experience. We have significantly increased tax-free bursaries for chemistry trainee teachers from £9,000 in 2012/13 to up to £20,000 in 2014/15. In addition, we continue to work jointly with the Royal Society of Chemistry to offer scholarship awards of £25,000 in order to attract the most talented chemists into initial teacher training (ITT). We have surpassed our target for trainees entering chemistry teacher training in each of the last three years, recruiting 121% of the target in 2011/12, 108% in 2012/13, and 127% in 2013/14.

We are continuing to fund subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) courses, which are an important tool to ensure all chemistry trainees have specialist subject knowledge. Around a quarter of accepted places for chemistry ITT in 2014/15 are being supported by SKE.

The latest annual School Workforce Census (2013) shows that 19.6% of chemistry teachers who teach pupils from years 7 to 13 have no relevant post-A Level qualification, down from 24.3% in the 2012 census, demonstrating the impact of these incentives.

The Government also recognises the vital importance of subject-specific development for in-service teachers. We have made almost £7 million available to fund a network of Regional Science Learning Centres and we are funding teaching schools to develop and deliver a range of post-ITT SKE provision in specific subjects, including chemistry.
