unstar this property answer text <p>The Government has no plans to reopen the pleural plaques compensation scheme, which operated between 2 August 2010 and 1 August 2011.</p><p> </p><p>The scheme operated as an extra-statutory one, making £5000 payments on an ex-gratia basis to applicants who fulfilled the scheme’s criteria, namely that they were individuals who had begun, but not resolved, a legal claim for compensation for pleural plaques at the time of the House of Lords ruling in October 2007 in the case of Rothwell v Chemical &amp; Insulating Co Ltd [2007] UKHL 39. That ruling had held that the occurrence of pleural plaques is not a compensatable disease.</p><p> </p><p>Eligibility for the scheme was limited to that category of people as they would have had an understandable expectation of receiving compensation when they began their claim, an expectation which would not have been shared by those diagnosed later.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>The Government set out its ambition for a reformed prison estate in the November 2016 Prison Safety and Reform White Paper including announcing building modern prisons on the sites of the former HM Prison and Young Offender Institution Glen Parva and HM Prison Wellingborough. Through the Ministry of Justice’s prison estate transformation programme we are getting the basics right by building decent prisons to improve rehabilitation and create safe and secure environments for staff and offenders. We will close prisons that cannot provide decent facilities, are expensive to operate and/or maintain; reinvesting savings into the maintenance or enhancement of the prisons in the estate.</p><p> </p><p>On 22 March 2017 the Government announced plans, subject to planning approvals, value for money and affordability, to build four modern prisons: adjacent to HM Prison Full Sutton in Yorkshire, Port Talbot in Neath and redevelop HM Prison and Young Offender Institution Rochester in Kent and HM Prison and Young Offender Institution Hindley, in Greater Manchester. Construction of a new 202 place houseblock at HMP Stocken, in Rutland is already underway. This will be ready for use from December 2018.</p><p> </p><p>No decisions have been made about prison closures other than those already announced.</p>

unstar this property answer text <p>Mediation for family law cases is already available under Part I of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 (LASPO).</p><p> </p><p>The department recently conducted an extensive review of LASPO and has announced several changes as part of the Legal Support Action Plan. These included expanding the scope of legal aid in family law to cover representation for special guardianship orders and placement orders.</p><p> </p><p>Data is not held on successful cases, but the Legal Aid Agency does hold data on cases that have started (and are funded by legal aid). unstar this property answer text <p>The Royal Charter establishing the Press Recognition Panel sets out the responsibilities of the Lord Chancellor. Other than in his role as Lord Chancellor, the Secretary of State for Justice does not have any ministerial responsibilities in respect of the Panel.</p><p> </p><p>HM Treasury determined that the Press Recognition Panel should fall under the Ministry of Justice Departmental Boundary for Estimates and Accounts purposes, this is purely an administrative action. There is no charge in terms of the Lord Chancellor's responsibilities as set out in the Royal Charter, and the Panel remains outside the Secretary of State's responsibilities.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>Algorithmic tools are used both by the National Probation Service and Community Rehabilitation Companies to support decision making and aid professional judgement in assessing the level of risk posed by offenders. We have internal processes in place to ensure we develop and roll-out algorithmic models appropriately and responsibly and are working with The Alan Turing Institute to make sure the use of these models is ethical, safe and fair. These tools are one element of a number of measures for assessing the risk of re-offending: In all cases, the professional judgement of the offender manager is a key factor in deciding what measures are needed to manage an offender and prevent re-offending.</p> more like this
