In the year to March 2019, the proportion of prisoners held in crowded accommodation was 22.5%, down from 24.2% the previous year and levels of around 25% experienced since 2004.</p><p>The Prime Minister’s pledge to invest up to £2.5 billion to create 10,000 additional prison places will have a positive impact on lowering the proportion of crowding in the prison estate, providing accommodation that is safe, decent and uncrowded. However, the extent to which the proportion of prisoners held in crowded accommodation will reduce will be dependent on future prison population levels.</p><p>Sentencing must match the severity of the crime and protecting the public will always be our priority. The sentencing reforms announced by the Government will ensure serious violent and sexual offenders spend longer in prison. The impact on the prison population will build up gradually over a number of years, and we will ensure that we have enough places for offenders sent by the courts.</p> question first answered 21/10/2019 14:54:30

This has been an internal review which has focused on the sentencing for the most serious violent and sexual offenders and the rules governing when and how those offenders are released. We have also, as part of this review, looked at changes to sentencing for the most prolific offenders which could help break the cycle of reoffending. Based on the findings of the review, we will be bringing forward proposals shortly for a comprehensive package of legislative reform. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction answer text <p>In common with all Government Departments, the Ministry of Justice has considered the impact of a No Deal Brexit on its institutions, including prisons.</p><p> </p><p>Preparations are underway to ensure we are ready to leave the European Union on 31 October, with or without a deal. This includes working closely with the Department of Health to make sure that the supply of health products to prisoners is not disrupted; ensuring that our food and retail contracts have alternative arrangements in case of disruption through ports; and co-operating with other government departments to prepare for contingencies such as potential traffic disruption in the South East.</p><p> </p><p>At a local level, all prisons have reviewed their contingency plans and are engaged with their Local Resilience Forums to put in place actions to mitigate against any potential impacts as necessary.</p><p> </p><p>Separately, over the past 3 years, we have invested £100m to provide additional Prison Officers to improve frontline safety, security and rehabilitation.
