Research carried out by the National Federation of ALMOs shows over three quarters of their tenants come onto Universal Credit with pre-existing rent arrears.</p><p>Arrears are usually temporary and the majority of claimants do succeed in paying their rent, managing their monthly payments and clearing their arrears over time</p><p>We continually review and improve Universal Credit in response to feedback. In 2018, following Autumn Budget 2017, we have implemented a comprehensive and wide-ranging package of improvements worth £1.5 billion. In December, 44% of households claiming housing support under Universal Credit were in the Private Rental Sector. We continue to engage with stakeholders in the Private Rental Sector to assess the effect of Universal Credit.</p><p> </p><p>Universal Credit is already significantly improving the rate at which those claiming benefits return to work. We are keen to understand more about the issue and work with stakeholders to consider what further action Government might take.</p><p> </p><p>With Universal Credit, payments can be paid directly to the landlords and we continue to listen to feedback and work with landlords to improve the system.
