The Department has been considering the appropriate scope and remit for the role, and has been discussing this informally with a number of stakeholders. Highways England has announced a preferred route which covers the:</p><ul><li><p>Mottram Moor link road;</p></li><li><p>A57(T) to A57 link road;</p></li><li><p>A616/A61(T) Westwood roundabout; and,</p></li><li><p>Safety and technology improvements along the route.</p></li></ul><p>The Department for Transport, in conjunction with Highways England and Transport for the North, is undertaking a study looking at the long term strategic road connection requirements to link the areas of Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire to transform journeys and enhance connectivity across the southern Pennines. This includes consideration of a trans-Pennine tunnel. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 21/10/2019 answer text <p>Our absolute priority is ensuring passengers in the north benefit from new trains, more services and increased capacity as quickly as possible.</p><p>Northern retired the first of its 102 Pacers in August and it plans to remove two thirds by December 2019. Northern advises that, subject to receiving appropriate dispensation, up to 34 (11 Class 142 and 23 Class 144) Pacers will remain in the fleet for a short time into 2020 to cover the delay in delivery of new trains into the franchise. If these trains were not allowed to continue in the fleet, then a large number of services would need to be cancelled and causing disruption for passengers across the North.
