However, participation in higher education is one of the key factors in improving social mobility and we now have record levels of disadvantaged students entering higher education. The Medical Research Council (MRC) is one of the main agencies through which the Government supports medical and clinical research. It is an independent research funding body which receives its grant-in-aid from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>In keeping with the Haldane principle, decisions on specific research priorities and funding are taken by the Research Councils based on advice from the research community through peer review The MRC welcomes high quality applications for support into any aspect of human health and these are judged in open competition with other demands on funding. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 20/01/2016 answer text <p><strong></strong></p><p>The Government is spending significant sums this year (circa £130 million) to train and develop the adult social care workforce; this includes £12m for the Workforce Development Fund for training to develop the workforce.</p><br /><p>Whilst pre-contract discussions had taken place, no formal financial commitment was made to this specific project by UK Commission for Employment and Skills and the project has been informed that funding is not available.</p><br /><p>In order to prioritise funding on the adult skills participation budgets, savings are being made from supporting budgets such as the UKCES.</p><br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /><p>The Government is working closely with its delivery partners, Skills for Care and National Skills Academy Social Care to improve the level of skills of the adult social care workforce.</p><br /><p>The adult social care workforce has a key role to play as service users experience of care depends heavily on the sensitivity and compassion of care workers. However, whilst higher education is an adult environment, it is a long-established principle that universities have a duty of care to their students.</p><p>Where health issues are related to a disability, universities have a legal duty under the Equality Act 2010 to provide reasonable adjustments for disabled students and to monitor their compliance with their Equality Act duties.
