Total trade in goods and services between the UK and Germany amounted to £132.7 billion in 2018.</p><p> </p><p>In August 2018, my Rt Hon. Friend the Secretary of State for International Trade launched the Export Strategy, through which the Government plans to increase UK total exports as a proportion of GDP to 35% and make Britain a 21st century exporting superpower. Germany will be a priority market for this strategy. The latest OECD Economic Outlook, published on 21 May, states that ‘weak global trade… continue[s] to impede growth in many [emerging-market] countries’.</p><p> </p><p>Well-functioning global trade relationships are vital for the global economy and for ensuring UK businesses can manage their supply chains effectively.</p><p> </p><p>In addition to working with countries to explore the best ways to develop our trade and investment relationships, we are putting resource behind our efforts to tackle market access barriers. These cover issues such as mutual recognition of conformity assessment in certain sectors. The UK has now completed work to transition these agreements to bilateral UK-US agreements. They are ready to come into effect when the UK leaves the EU.</p><p> </p><p>On 14 February 2019, the UK and US signed a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) on Conformity Assessment to ensure continuity of mutual recognition in the following three sectors: good manufacturing practice for pharmaceuticals, telecommunications equipment, and electromagnetic compatibility. Other agreements, including on wine, spirits and marine equipment have been signed between the UK and US to ensure continuity as the UK leaves the EU.</p><p> </p><p>These agreements do not cover all of UK trade with the US. The US continues to be our single largest bilateral trading partner. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 18/06/2019 answer text <p>The UK is committed to negotiating an ambitious free trade agreement with the United States as soon as we have left the European Union.</p><p> </p><p>The President and Prime Minister have made clear on a number of occasions their shared commitment to an ambitious, wide-ranging free trade deal that reflects the strength of our bilateral relationship. We welcome the publication by the US Administration of their negotiating objectives for a free trade agreement with the UK as well as the President’s positive public comments during the recent state visit.</p><p> </p><p>Although we cannot enter into negotiations with the US until we leave the EU, there is still much that we can do to lay the groundwork for an ambitious deal. This includes:</p><p> </p><p>Completing our domestic UK processes so that we are ready to start negotiations;</p><p> </p><p>Continuing our conversations with the Office of the US Trade Representative to prepare for live negotiations. These conversations are well advanced, including through the UK/US Trade and Investment Working Group, which has now met five times since it was established in July 2017. Our position is definitive: the NHS is not, and never will be, for sale to the private sector, whether overseas or domestic. The government will ensure no trade agreements will ever be able to alter these fundamental facts.</p><p> </p><p>The UK’s public services are protected by specific exceptions and reservations in existing EU Free Trade Agreements (FTAs).
