star this property answer text <p>The report <em>Manufacturing Sector Performance, UK: 2008–2018</em>, published by the Office for National Statistics on the 2nd April, details how the manufacturing sector has grown since the recession, and does not cover potential tariffs, or the UK exiting the European Union.</p><p>Both the UK and the EU share a strong commercial interest in preserving integrated supply chains.</p><p> </p><p>The government recognises that the manufacturing sector remains a vital contributor to the economy of the UK, driving innovation, exports, job creation, and productivity growth. The sector supports 2.7 million jobs, generates 49% of the UK total exports of goods and services, and accounts for 66% of all business expenditure on UK R&amp;D. Through our modern Industrial Strategy and Made Smarter – our key national industrial digitalisation programme – we are building an economy fit for the future. In the process, we are exploiting the wealth of opportunities from next generation technologies that foster competitive business environments, allowing for UK manufacturing to flourish. As the 9th largest global manufacturing economy, we are – and will continue to be – a major manufacturing nation.</p>

star this property answer text <p>The Government recognises the critical role competitive extended manufacturing supply chains play in the UK economy – boosting inward investment, exports, job creation, productivity and value for local economies.</p><p> </p><p>We have are been assessing all aspects of supply chain impacts including ‘just-in-time’ systems. The government’s UK-EU Future Relationship White Paper proposes the establishment of a free trade area for goods, which would protect the uniquely integrated supply chains and ‘just-in-time’ processes that have developed across the UK and the EU. We are also continuing to review evidence to identify opportunities to make UK manufacturing supply chains stronger, more visible and efficient, and improve the offer to potential investors.</p> more like this

Through our modern Industrial Strategy, we are creating opportunities for UK manufacturing to build on its strengths and continue to grow.</p><p> </p><p>We are working closely with industry to secure a strong future for UK manufacturers through major new investment in research, with a commitment to increase total R&amp;D investment to 2.4% of GDP by 2027. In addition, we are:</p><p> </p><ul><li>Investing £1bn through the ambitious new Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, bringing together world class UK research with business investment to develop the technologies and industries of the future;</li><li>Reforming our technical education system to achieve a world-class status;</li><li>Developing a National Retraining Scheme to support adults to upskill and reskill throughout their career as the economy changes;</li><li>Creating the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, a domestic programme of investment to boost productivity and reduce economic inequality across the country following our departure from the European Union;</li><li>Working with industry to exploit opportunities highlighted in the Made Smarter Review, which identifies significant benefits to the UK from integrating digital technology into manufacturing through a strong government and industry partnership.</li></ul>

star this property answer text <p>Government statistics are not collected at a sufficiently detailed level to estimate the value to the economy of specific materials such as carbon fibre. star this property answer text <p>Despite difficult global economic conditions, manufacturing output has increased by 2.4 per cent in real terms and 14.9 per cent in current prices since 2010. Manufacturing productivity has also increased more than three times faster than the UK economy as a whole over the past 10 years. The sector spans over 130,000 businesses and directly employs 2.7 million of people, with an estimated 5.1m employed across the total manufacturing value chain. It accounts for half of all British exports, and around 70 per cent of all UK R&amp;D spending. Manufacturing activity creates demand and value in other sectors, with official statistics suggesting that each £1 increase in demand for manufacturing industry products results in an over £1.70 in output across the economy as a whole.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Government recognises the importance of manufacturing to the UK economy and we have continued to invest significant funding through the High Value Manufacturing Catapult. This has led to the launch of two new programmes designed to offer additional cutting edge equipment and expertise and extend the Catapult’s services to more manufacturing sectors; and to enable UK SMEs to become more productive and to win more business. We have also provided funding for the Catapult to establish two new centres in the North East - the National Biologics Manufacturing Centre at Darlington and the National Formulation Centre at NETPark in Sedgefield.</p><p> </p><p>Innovate UK manages development of the Catapult network on behalf of Government.</p><p> </p><p>It has rigorously considered the potential merits of establishing a Materials Catapult for Manufacturing and has concluded that there is no robust case to establish a Materials Catapult at this time. This decision has been confirmed within the last month and my Department does not intend to re-examine this assessment.</p>
