At the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, the UK Government committed £70 million to boost research into how to reduce the use of plastics and help countries prevent plastic waste entering our oceans. DFID is contributing up to £39 million, providing technical assistance to governments in developing countries who have committed to taking action, and testing practical approaches to increase plastic recycling rates through pilots in Bangladesh, Ghana and Uganda. Our support for implementation of the political declaration includes funding to the World Health Organisation to assist countries to develop Universal Health Coverage country plans and the health financing strategies needed to meet the commitment to increase public spending on health, with an emphasis on primary health care. <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/speeches/alok-sharma-speech-to-un-general-assembly-on-universal-health-coverage" target="_blank">Our announcement</a> at the UN General Assembly of £600m to buy family planning supplies will <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/women-and-girls/uk-announce-600m-aid-family-planning-us-ramps-anti-abortion/" target="_blank">provide access to family planning</a> for 20 million women and girls each year up to 2025. We have pressed for any movement to be safe, voluntary and informed, and for strong protection safeguards and measures to be part of any relocation plan. We have insisted that humanitarian aid assistance should be provided independently of movements and of any relocation plan.
