star this property answer text
It is not possible to calculate the full costs of the Occupation to any degree of accuracy and determine how these are currently offset through the provision of international aid, including from the UK. What we do know is that Israeli restrictions do considerable damage to the Palestinian economy, are one of the main impediments to economic growth, and contribute to a reliance on international aid. DFID is providing £349 million in support of Palestinian development between 2011 and 2015. Decisions on funding for the next five years will be made at the next spending review.

more like this

At the Gaza Reconstruction Conference in October, the UK pledged a further £20 million which includes the provision of shelter and basic services for people displaced from their homes. We have disbursed a quarter of this pledge already to help meet the needs of the most vulnerable this winter. The UK is providing £0.5 million to the Mechanism as part of our pledge for Gaza early recovery and reconstruction. By 10 December, more than 6,000 people had been able to buy building materials. Ultimately, we need to see a sustainable solution for Gaza that addresses the underlying issues, and we continue to urge the parties to resume negotiations to that end.

more like this

In their latest bulletin, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs note that the situation remains extremely fragile, marked by slow progress in the reconstruction of homes and infrastructure destroyed during the summer hostilities, and compounded by the ongoing energy crisis and growing internal political tensions. The UN Relief and Works Agency has reported two deaths in January due to the cold and inadequate shelter.
