unstar this property answer text <p>Under the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005, preservation of the Scottish Gaelic language is a devolved matter.</p><p> </p><p>The Scottish Government published their second Gaelic language plan in 2016 (for 2016-2021) which outlines their commitment to support the use of the language in its operations and also how to support other public services to fulfil their own commitments to Gaelic.</p><p> </p><p>The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) works to support minority languages through its work on the creative industries strand of the British Irish Council. This includes working with the devolved administrations to support minority languages, share best practice, and nurture more diverse UK audiences, including through minority language publications.</p><p> </p><p>DCMS officials also work with MG Alba (Gaelic Media Scotland who jointly own BBC Alba with the BBC) on a number of different issues to support the Gaelic language.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>The UK Government has not held discussions with the Scottish Government about the decision of Shetland Council on 9 September to approve a motion for “exploring options” for achieving “financial and political self-determination”.</p><p> </p><p>We recognise the importance of Shetland and its proud traditions and contribution to the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom Government has already demonstrated commitment to devolution of power in areas such as Greater Manchester and Greater London as well as in Scotland. We are keen to see power sit at the most appropriate level of government, including local government, and there is much that the Scottish Government could learn from United Kingdom Government practice in that respect.</p><p> </p> more like this

The UK Government’s position remains consistent; we are keen to see power sit at the most appropriate level of Government, including local government and there is much that the Scottish Government could learn from United Kingdom Government practice in that respect.</p><p> </p><p>The UK Government engages closely with local government and the devolved administrations, as well as wider public and private sector organisations. We will always work constructively with all layers of government to ensure the best outcomes for people, businesses and jobs.</p> more like this

We engage closely with the Scottish Government on Scotland Act Orders, which were established under the Scotland Act 1998, to help manage the Scottish devolution settlement. The Scotland Act 1998 sets out mechanisms in the event of activity which may be contrary to the Scottish devolution settlement.</p><p> </p><p>The UK Government engages regularly with the Scottish Government in a wide range of other areas, including on the collective challenges we face, such as our recovery from Covid-19. The UK Government reports quarterly on intergovernmental engagement and activity with the Scottish Government and other devolved administrations.</p> more like this
