Between 2017 and 2025, the total cost to the NHS and social care from air pollution in England is estimated to be £1.60 billion for fine particulate matter (PM<sub>2.5</sub>) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO<sub>2</sub>) combined (£1.54 billion for PM<sub>2.5</sub> and £60.81 million for NO<sub>2</sub>) where there is robust evidence for an association between exposure and disease. Research has identified that younger donors offer the potential for better patient outcomes and a greater chance of survival. In 2017, 82% of people who were selected to donate their stem cells were male, and 58% were men aged 30 and under. In acknowledgement of this fact, the Department provides funding to Anthony Nolan and NHS Blood and Transplant to support recruitment of young male donors. In 2017 69% of new potential donors recruited to the United Kingdom registry were under the age of 30, and 40% of new potential donors were male.</p><p> </p><p>The Department also funds Anthony Nolan and NHS Blood and Transplant to improve equity of access to unrelated donor stem cell transplantation for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) patients through targeted recruitment to the Anthony Nolan and the NHS Stem Cell Registry.</p><p> </p><p>The Department has provided more than £26 million to NHS Blood and Transplant and Anthony Nolan for stem cell donation since 2011 and have set very specific targets about the proportion of donors that must be from BAME backgrounds; for example, in this financial year, Anthony Nolan will continue to target more than 35% of the umbilical cords stored in the UK Cord Blood Bank to be donated by mothers from BAME backgrounds.</p> answering member constituency Thurrock answering member printed Jackie Doyle-Price question first answered 26/10/2018 11:53:19 answering member 4065 label Biography information for Dame Jackie Doyle-Price

	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 06/09/2021 answer text <p>While Government-funded therapeutics research is not specifically focused on people with blood cancer or blood disorders, many of these patients are immunocompromised, which is a priority cohort for research into therapeutic and prophylaxis treatments such as monoclonal antibody therapies, novel antivirals, and repurposed compounds.</p><p>As part of the COVID-19 Immunity National Core Study, UK Research and Innovation is providing £4 million towards the OCTAVE study. The OCTAVE study will examine the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines in clinically at-risk groups. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 17/06/2019 answer text <p>When a person has a Holistic Needs Assessments (HNA) they are asked to identify any concerns from a checklist which will normally include emotional, relationship and spiritual concerns. People can of course, raise concerns at any time with their general practitioner or hospital team, not just when an HNA is being done. This should lead to actions being agreed in a personalised care and support plan that includes appropriate action to support the person with their psychosocial or mental health needs. The COVID-19 Health Inequalities Monitoring for England tool provides provisional estimates of life expectancy in England and the English regions for 2020 and the preceding five years and is available at the following link:</p><p><a href="https://analytics.phe.gov.uk/apps/chime/" target="_blank">https://analytics.phe.gov.uk/apps/chime/</a></p><p>Life expectancy in England and the West Midlands fell between 2019 and 2020. These falls in life expectancy in 2020 were almost entirely a result of deaths from COVID-19. Comparable estimates for local authorities are not available.</p><p>The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities was established on 1 October to reduce such health disparities. That is why we have published our Delivery Plan for Recovering Access to Primary Care. The plan has two central ambitions to improve access both nationally and in Coventry and West Midlands, namely to tackle the 8am rush and reduce the number of people struggling to contact their practice, and for patients to know on the day they contact their practice how their request will be managed.</p><p>We will achieve this by modernising telephone systems which can help practices to better match their capacity to patient demand, backed by £240 million in retargeted funding. All practices have now signed up to transition to new digital systems. The plan will empower patients to do more themselves, cutting bureaucracy for general practitioners and building capacity to deliver more appointments. We have established a national discharge taskforce, with local and national government and the NHS.
