star this property answer text <p>The Cancer Patient Experience Survey 2016 results show that 90% of respondents said that they were given the name of a clinical nurse specialist who would support them through their treatment. NHS England is working alongside Health Education England to expand the number of Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) and develop clear CNS competencies and routes into training. This will ensure every cancer patient has access to a CNS or other support worker by 2021.</p> more like this

Macmillan Cancer Support is due publish to the latest CNS census in spring 2018.</p><p> </p><p>In the 2016 Cancer Patient Experience Survey, 90% of patients reported being given the name of a CNS who would support them through their treatment. Health Education England's first ever Cancer Workforce Plan, published in December 2017, made the commitment to support the expansion of CNSs so that every patient has access to a CNS or other support worker by 2021. This will be achieved by developing national competencies and a clear route into training.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Health Education England (HEE) published its first ever cancer workforce plan in December 2017, which commits to the expansion of capacity and skills. The Plan states that HEE will support the expansion of Cancer Nurse Specialists (CNS) by developing national competencies and a clear route into training, so that every patient has access to a CNS or other support worker by 2021. HEE will work with partners to identify and develop clear career pathways into the CNS role as part of a wider review of the contribution nurses can make to cancer.</p><p> </p><p>A more detailed report on nursing and cancer using learning from the recently published Macmillan Specialist Adult Cancer Nurse Census will be contained in phase 2 of the cancer workforce strategy, which will be published by HEE for consultation in the summer.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Government has supported the development of a range of specialist roles within nursing, such as cancer clinical specialist nurses. These roles are specialist post-registration qualifications which are attained through additional Continuing Professional Development training.</p><p> </p><p>At a local level, it is ultimately the responsibility of National Health Service trusts, working with their clinical commissioning groups, to ensure they have sufficient staff on their wards with the right skills to treat patients in their care and are responsible for investing in training for cancer specialist nursing skills and for employing cancer specialist nurses.</p><p> </p><p>Following the publication of the Five Year Forward View, an independent Cancer Taskforce was set up to develop a new five-year strategy for cancer. Health Education England has representation on the National Cancer Transformation Board responsible for the implementation of the Taskforce’s report, and will be working in partnership with NHS England and a range of professional bodies to develop a shared vision and strategy for the cancer workforce.</p>
