We raise our concerns regularly and freely, using a range of Ministerial and diplomatic channels, including our Ambassador and Embassy team in Riyadh. The Foreign Secretary raised the detention of women’s rights defenders during his visit to Saudi Arabia in March. The UK was signatory to the joint statement on 7 March at the United Nations Human Rights Council which raised significant concerns about reports of continuing arrests and arbitrary detentions of human rights defenders in Saudi Arabia, including women's rights activists. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 21/07/2020 answer text <p>The COVID-19 pandemic has presented a serious challenge to all countries, and Latin America is facing one of the deadliest outbreaks. Inevitably this has added to the difficulties Colombia faces with the implementation of the Peace Accord, but all parties have taken effective steps to try to mitigate this impact, as the Special Representative, Carlos Ruiz Massieu, noted in his most recent report. At the UN Security Council on 14 July, our Permanent Representative commended the parties for having adapted quickly to the situation, and urged the Colombian government to continue to work with its domestic and international partners to provide assistance to former combatant communities so reintegration could remain on track despite an economic downturn.</p><p>During this challenging time, the Colombian government has reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the 2016 peace agreement in full. The UK will continue to support the Colombian peace process and to emphasise the importance of pressing ahead with work to consolidate peace and build stability. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 20/07/2020 answer text <p>The UK remains concerned about the persistent level of violence towards human rights defenders in Colombia and we have noted indications that this may have worsened during the COVID-19 lockdown. We regularly raise this issue, as well as specific cases of concern, with the Colombian Government and in multilateral fora. We have also called on the Colombian Government to prioritise tackling and preventing this violence. Most recently, our Permanent Representative to the UN expressed our deep concern at the UN Security Council on 14 July. I also raised the issue during a phone call with Colombian Foreign Minister Claudia Blum on 2 June.</p><p>Colombia is a UK Government &quot;Human Rights Priority Country&quot; and as such our Embassy in Bogota has provided significant programming to help at-risk human rights defenders. In meetings with the President in London last year, the then-Foreign Secretary made it clear that the UK sees the transitional justice system, including the Special Jurisdiction for Peace, and the involvement of victims as vital elements of the 2016 accords. President Duque's signing of the transitional justice law last June was welcome, and we are pleased that the institutions established under that law have since begun their work.</p><p>We continue to emphasise our support for transitional justice both with the Colombian government and in multilateral fora, including most recently at the UN Security Council on 14 July, where our Permanent Representative commended the institutions' quick adaptation to the COVID-19 pandemic by moving their work online. We are aware that the parties to the Peace Accord would like the UN Verification Mission to take on a role verifying compliance with the sanctions handed down by the Special Jurisdiction for Peace. This has included regularly highlighting the work of the National Commission on Security Guarantees, including most recently at the UN Security Council on 14 July, and calling on the government and civil society to make fuller use of it for this purpose. We also agreed to work closely together to resolve ongoing conflicts in the region, tackle terrorism and counter extremism, in particular tackling the threat posed by ISIL. The issue of migrant workers was not included in the agenda for the meeting. The British Government takes seriously the issue of health and safety of construction workers building all infrastructure projects in the Gulf, including Qatar. We expect FIFA to do the same with regard to specific World Cup related projects. British officials promote the importance of local construction projects meeting international safety standards with their Qatari counterparts. The UK continues to work closely with our G7 partners, including as part of the Global Counterterrorism Forum and Counter-ISIL coalition; with governments across the Middle East and North Africa, building their ability to counter radicalisation, tackle terrorist threats and reduce the number of individuals seeking to join terrorist groups in Syria, Libya and elsewhere; and at the UN, where we have co-sponsored a number of important Security Council Resolutions. On kidnap for ransom there has been significant progress: in January 2014, the UK sponsored UN Security Council Resolution 2133, which built on the Lough Erne Leaders’ Communiqué and reinforced the international consensus not to make concessions to terrorist kidnappers. Since the resolution was adopted, we have continued to encourage other states to abide by this international commitment. We have also continued to strengthen our own domestic legislation in line with the Lough Erne commitments. On Syria, the UK continues, with G7 partners, to support efforts to resume political talks, based on the implementation of the 2012 Geneva Communiqué. To address the significant humanitarian crisis, the UK has supported the adoption of UN Security Council Resolutions 2139, 2165 and 2191 (which call for the protection of civilians and unhindered delivery of aid to those most in need) and has now pledged over £1.1 billion in support. In Libya, the UK has continued to support UN efforts to reach a lasting political agreement. The UK Special Envoy to the Libyan Political Transition, Jonathan Powell, and the UK diplomatic network are working hard with key Libyan interlocutors and international partners. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 14/12/2015 answer text <p>Through our network of Embassies and High Commissions, the Government regularly urges governments across the world to protect the right of all individuals to practise their religion or belief free from persecution or discrimination.</p><p>We promote this freedom bilaterally by raising individual cases with governments and by seeking to influence them to remove discriminatory legislation or practices. We also promote religious freedom in multilateral fora by working together with our international partners</p><p>For example, in Burma, we have raised our deep concern at the rise of hate speech and religious intolerance with the Burmese authorities and will continue to do so, both publicly and in private. We have supported a number of projects, including developing relationships between Burmese youth and different religious communities, and arranging exchanges between activists on religious freedom in Burma and Indonesia. In Iraq, we are funding a project to prevent intolerance and violence towards religious communities by strengthening the ability of youth and civil society to advocate the right to freedom of religion or belief.</p><p>Promoting freedom of religion or belief is a priority for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Human Rights and Democracy Programme.
