star this property answer text While the British Government has not raised this specific case with the Israeli government or the Palestinian Authority, we regularly urge both parties to intensify measures to support Gaza’s reconstruction and economic development, including on energy. On 10 September, during Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s visit to the UK the Prime Minister, my right hon. Friend the Member for Witney (Mr Cameron), and the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my right hon. Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge (Mr Hammond), emphasised the importance of improving daily life for the people of Gaza, for example through better power and water supplies and facilitating exports from Gaza. more like this

star this property answer text The UK's Representative made clear in our statement that the UK fully supports and recognises the need for an independent and transparent investigation, which includes the extent to which Israeli security forces' rules of engagement are in line with international law, and the role Hamas played in events. The UK abstained on the resolution at the Human Rights Council because it was not impartial, and was unhelpfully unbalanced. We could not support an international investigation that is mandated to look at Israel's actions alone. This would not provide a comprehensive assessment of accountability. It would risk hardening positions on both sides and move us further away from a just and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The UK has called directly on Israel to carry out a transparent inquiry into the Israeli Defence Forces’ conduct at the border fence and to demonstrate how this will achieve a sufficient level of independence. This investigation should include international members and the findings of such an investigation should be made public.

star this property answer text
While we have not made any assessment of this issue, we have been clear that we believe that a durable ceasefire agreement should ensure that Hamas and other terrorist groups permanently end rocket fire and other terrorist attacks against Israel, and that all terrorist groups in Gaza should disarm. Our policy on Hamas remains clear: Hamas must renounce violence, recognise Israel and accept previously signed agreements. Hamas must make credible movement towards these conditions, which remain the benchmark against which its intentions should be judged. We call on those in the region with influence over Hamas to encourage them to take these steps.
more like this

We strongly support the mediation efforts of the international community led by Egypt and the UN and urge continued talks aimed at finding an enduring peace in Gaza.
