The government has continued to take the difficult decisions needed to secure a stronger recovery for all and build a fairer society.</p><p> </p><p>The latest official labour market figures show that employment in the UK is at its highest ever level, 30.76 million, an increase of 1.7 million since the Coalition entered office. That is why we introduced the Employment Allowance in April 2014 which entitles businesses and charities to a £2,000 allowance on their annual National Insurance contributions bill. The allowance is reducing the cost of employment, supporting small businesses aspiring to grow by hiring their first employee or expanding their workforce.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>We are also abolishing Employer National Insurance contributions for under 21s on earnings up to £813 a week from April 2015 helping to support full-time employment for young people. In total, construction of the full HS2 route to the north-west and Yorkshire will create up to 25,000 jobs and 2,000 apprenticeships. Another 3,000 people will operate HS2 and it is estimated that growth around new HS2 stations will create another 100,000 jobs.</p><p> </p><p>With regard to Heathrow airport, the final report of the Airports Commission stated that “expansion could generate 59-77,000 additional direct, indirect and induced jobs.”</p><p> </p><p>HM Treasury has made no recent estimate of the number of supply chain jobs in the UK supported by Hinkley Point C nuclear power station or the Crossrail 2 proposal. It helped Germany stop a long-term increase in unemployment.</p><p> </p><p>The UK unemployment rate currently stands at 4.3%, a 42 year low. The UK ranks very well internationally on labour market flexibility. It is a key strength of our economy and has played an important role in achieving the near record employment levels that we currently enjoy.</p><p> </p><p>We also exempt many low-paid jobs from income tax. This government has increased the personal allowance, and as a result, 1.2m individuals will be taken out of income tax altogether by 2018-19 compared to 2015-16.</p><p> </p><p>We are also introducing Universal Credit, a long overdue and necessary reform.
