Within Customer Compliance Group, staff are deployed across a wide range of compliance risks. Internally, these are usually grouped by customer segment, tax head or specific tax risk being worked.</p><p> </p><p>HMRC publishes information on the amounts spent on compliance by customer segment in our annual report and accounts at <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/hmrc-annual-report-and-accounts-2022-to-2023-technical-notes/tax-by-different-customer-groups-2022-to-2023" target="_blank">Tax by different customer groups – 2022 to 2023 - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)</a>. unstar this property answer text <p>HMRC enforces the National Minimum Wage (NMW) and National Living Wage (NLW) in line with the law and policy set out by the Department for Business and Trade (DBT).</p><p>The Government is determined that everyone who is entitled to the NMW receives it.</p><p>HMRC’s NMW compliance work is funded by DBT. The annual funding for minimum wage enforcement has doubled since 2015 (Table 1, link below) and this additional investment has enabled a significant expansion of resources dedicated to enforcing the minimum wage.</p><p><a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1149618/supplementary_data_for_enforcement_and_compliance_report.xlsx" target="_blank"><em>https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1149618/supplementary_data_for_enforcement_and_compliance_report.xlsx</em>(opens in a new tab)</a></p><p>Data on the number of full-time equivalent staff (FTE) working in HMRC’s NMW team will change during the course of the year, and the final FTE position will be published as part of the Government Evidence on Enforcement and Compliance in 2024/2025.</p>

Within Customer Compliance Group, staff are deployed across a wide range of compliance risks. unstar this property answer text <p>As announced in Autumn Statement 2023, the Government is investing £163 million to increase HMRC’s customer support and debt collection capacity. This will ensure those who can afford to pay their tax debts do so, while increasing HMRC’s ability to identify taxpayers who need additional time to pay their tax bills.</p><p> </p><p>HMRC will add 700 full time equivalents to its debt management frontline team. This will significantly improve customer support for individuals and businesses: allowing more debtors to be contacted over the telephone, providing those who are struggling to pay with support, and ensuring that those who can pay their tax debts do.</p><p> </p><p>The new staff recruited to operational teams are currently not included in existing HMRC tax compliance staffing figures.</p><p> </p><p>These measures build on Spring Budget 2023 announcements to improve HMRC’s debt collection capabilities, which is essential to maintaining a low and stable tax gap and funding public services.</p><p> </p>

unstar this property answer text <p>HMRC does not expect staff working on Research and Development (R&amp;D tax relief schemes to be experts in the field of technology. That is not required because it is HMRC’s responsibility to ask questions to establish that the claimant understands and has correctly applied the definition of qualifying R&amp;D. HMRC are seeking to gather information to test against the requirements for eligibility.</p><p> </p><p>HMRC staff work with customers to understand the commercial context of their activities and whether they qualify for R&amp;D relief and as part of the checking process. Where HMRC deal with complex matters HMRC staff can seek technical support or specialist advice.</p> more like this
