	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 01/07/2019 answer text <p>The Government considers that veterinary research is vital to improving the lives of all horses.</p><p> </p><p>The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) is a non-departmental public body which was established to administer the Horserace Betting Levy, under which betting operators pay 10% of their profits on British racing back to support the sport.</p><p> </p><p>One of the statutory objectives of the HBLB is focused on the advancement or encouragement of veterinary science or veterinary education. To this end, the HBLB have invested over £35 million since 2000 in veterinary research and education, which I understand supports the welfare of all equines in Great Britain as well as thoroughbreds. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 01/07/2019 answer text <p>The Government is keen that the welfare needs of racehorses are well met, both during their racing lives and afterwards. On 14 May, I met the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) as well as the new independent Chair of the BHA’s newly appointed Horse Welfare Board. This Board was formed in March 2019 and includes members from across the racing industry, veterinarians and animal health and welfare specialists. This was a constructive meeting where the number of fatalities of racehorses was acknowledged and both sides agreed that further action is required to tackle avoidable harm and make the sport safer.</p><p> </p><p>The Board committed to doing all it can to improve welfare outcomes and is working on producing an equine welfare manifesto, outlining the industry’s priorities in this area. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 01/07/2019 answer text <p>Equine influenza is not a notifiable disease in the UK, which means that the industry takes responsibility for controlling the disease.</p><p> </p><p>Vaccination is the main control measure, alongside isolation of infected cases and minimising the mixing of horses during an outbreak.</p><p> </p><p>The Government has been monitoring the situation and maintaining close contact with the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), the Animal Health Trust (AHT) and the British Horse Council. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 02/07/2019 answer text <p>Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official charity established in 2000 for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. The charity promotes the versatility and adaptability of racehorses for other equine activities. We understand that over 6,500 retired racehorses are registered with RoR as active in a second career. In 2018, RoR’s education programme, open to all registered horses, organised or oversaw the staging of 301 events, with 1,681 horses attending. As a result, RoR plays a leading role on the international scene providing advice to other jurisdictions seeking guidance on setting up their own aftercare programmes. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 23/10/2019 answer text <p>As part of the Government’s ambitious 25 Year Environment Plan (YEP), we are providing £5.7 million to support the existing Northern Forest Partnership, with Community Forests and The Woodland Trust to accelerate and further develop the Northern Forest. This will help plant at least 1.8 million new trees in the Northern Forest by 2022. A minimum of 1 million of these trees are being delivered through the Partnership Innovation Fund element of our investment. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 30/10/2019 answer text <p>This Government is committed to paying people a decent living wage, which is being addressed through the statutory National Living Wage (NLW). In April 2019, the NLW increased to £8.21 per hour, handing a full-time worker a further £690 annual pay rise. By 2024 the NLW will rise to £10.50 per hour, reaching 66% of median UK earnings. The scope will be expanded to everyone aged 21 and over and is expected to benefit over 4 million low paid workers.</p><p> </p><p>There are 85 staff in core-Defra, based in the National pay region, paid less than the London Living Wage (LLW) rate of £10.55 per hour, as set out by the Living Wage Foundation (LWF).</p><p> </p><p>There are less than 5 staff based in the London pay region paid less than the LLW. There will be no staff based in the London pay region paid less than the LLW once the 2019 Defra pay award (effective from 1 July 2019) has been implemented. This is expected to be in November pay.</p><p> </p><p>The Government will always award contracts on the basis of the best value for money for the taxpayer.</p><p> </p><p>The service providers contracted to carry out third party cleaning contracts for Defra managed buildings, including those of our executive agencies, are provided through an outsourced Total Facilities Management contract with Interserve FM. The contract requires Interserve FM to pay all employees the living wage as defined by the LWF. The Facilities Management supplier holds information on the rate of remuneration of its staff.
