	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 08/10/2019 answer text <p>Last year the Government published the Resources and Waste Strategy, setting out our plans to reduce, reuse and recycle more plastic than we do now. Our target is to eliminate all avoidable plastic waste throughout the life of the 25 Year Environment Plan, but for the most problematic plastics we are going faster - that is why we commit to work towards all plastic packaging placed on the UK market being recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.</p><p>We have made good progress, the Government’s plastic bag charge has led to a 90% reduction in the use of plastic carrier bags in the main retailers and raised in last year alone over £51 million for environmental causes. The Government also recently consulted on plans to extend the charge to all retailers and on increasing the minimum charge to at least 10p.</p><p> </p><p>We have recently consulted on a suite of measures to help overhaul the waste system. Collectively our proposals are aimed at boosting recycled content in plastic packaging, through a proposed tax on plastic packaging which does not meet a minimum threshold of at least 30% recycled content. This will make producers foot the bill for handling the packaging they place on the market when it becomes waste, and ending the confusion over household recycling by introducing more consistency in collection services. In addition, earlier this year the Government announced that a ban on the supply of plastic straws, stirrers, and plastic-stemmed cotton buds to the end user will come into force from April 2020.</p><p> </p><p>Industry is also taking action, in April last year, the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation launched their world-leading UK Plastics Pact, with support from the Government, accounting for over 85% of plastic packaging used in UK supermarkets. The Pact brings organisations from across the supply chain together, from plastic manufacturers through to waste management companies, with four key targets for 2025 that aim to reduce the amount of plastic waste generated, including one to take actions to eliminate problematic or unnecessary single-use packaging items.</p> answering member constituency Taunton Deane answering member printed Rebecca Pow question first answered 08/10/2019 10:25:50 answering member 4522 label Biography information for Rebecca Pow

The industry is experienced in dealing with scenarios that can affect food supply and Defra Ministers and officials meet with them regularly to support their contingency planning as we prepare to leave the EU.</p><p> </p><p>The UK’s high degree of food security is built on access to a range of sources including robust supply chains across a range of countries, in addition to strong domestic production. Consumers have access to a wide range of food products when they shop and this will continue once we leave the EU. If we have to leave with no deal, there will not be an overall shortage of food in the UK. However we have not restricted the types of measures eligible local authorities could bid for funding for from the Clean Air Fund which supports local authorities with nitrogen dioxide exceedances. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 21/06/2019 answer text <p>Our UK Plan for Tackling Roadside Nitrogen Dioxide (NO<sub>2</sub>) Concentrations, supported by a £3.5 billion investment into air quality and cleaner transport, sets out how we will achieve legal compliance of NO<sub>2</sub> limits in the shortest possible time.</p><p> </p><p>As a result of the NO<sub>2</sub> Plan, the Government is working closely with 61 English local authorities to tackle their exceedances.</p><p> </p><p>Oxford City Council (OCC) was required to carry out a targeted feasibility study where the Defra/ DfT Joint Air Quality Unit provided £50,000 as part of the NO2 plan.</p><p>Under the Air Quality Grant, OCC was provided with £122,500 for city-wide communication programmes to support achievement of zero-emissions delivery freight, and £128, 500 for testing of low cost Zephyr sensor packages to compare with current sensors and improve data.</p> answering member constituency Suffolk Coastal answering member printed Dr Thérèse Coffey question first answered 21/06/2019 13:48:30 answering member 4098 label Biography information for Dr Thérèse Coffey
