star this property answer text <p> </p><p>The British Geological Survey (BGS) is surveying the current distribution of methane concentrations in UK groundwater, focusing on areas where aquifers are underlain by shale units that may be exploited for shale gas. star this property answer text <p> </p><p>Defra has in place monitoring to inform our understanding of the conservation status of certain marine habitats and species, much of which is in response to EU legislation. We also continue to support the Marine Climate Change Impacts Partnership which brings together scientists, government, its agencies and NGOs to provide co-ordinated advice on climate change impacts around our coast and in our seas. Further, we have recently consulted on proposals for monitoring the state of the marine environment, including marine animals, under the provisions of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. We will be publishing our response to that consultation shortly.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Defra currently has no plans to specifically assess the impact of potential changes in populations of marine animals as a result of climate change on levels of tourism. However, where appropriate, Government impact assessments include consideration of the economic impacts of policies in the marine environment on tourism.</p><p> </p>

star this property answer text <p>Going into this winter every community that was affected by the storms and floods of last winter will have the same or better standard of protection as they had before last winter.</p><p>Following the tidal surge on 5 December 2013 and the winter storms, a total of 890 recovery projects were identified across England; of these, 844 projects involved the repair of flood defence assets. The remaining 46 involve surveys, studies or actions relating to incident response.</p><p>By 31 October 2014, permanent repairs had been completed for 802 (95%) of the 844 defence projects. There are 42 (5%) defence projects where temporary repairs with contingency measures are in place, restoring the standard of protection to pre-winter 2013/14 levels.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>During 2014, the Marine Management Organisation approved 26 international swaps of ray quota. A total of 326.5 tonnes of rays were swapped out for other species, and 75.6 tonnes of ray quota were gained through international swaps.</p><p> </p><p><strong> </strong></p><p> </p><p>Some 220 tonnes of plaice were swapped out during 2014, across a total of eight transactions.</p><p> </p><p><strong> </strong></p><p> </p><p>These international quota swaps were discussed with the fishing industry and approved in order to acquire stocks that UK fishermen wish to catch.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Each proposed swap is considered on its merits.</p><p> </p> more like this

It is important that quota limits are not exceeded, in order to protect the long term future of the industry. Early closure is used only as a last resort.</p><p> </p><p><strong> </strong></p><p> </p><p>Fishermen should not risk their safety, or that of their crew and vessel at any time. star this property answer text <p> </p><p>The tables show the total full time equivalent (FTE) staff employed by the Environment Agency from 30 June 2010 to 30 June 2014.</p><p> </p><p>The numbers fell by 1,070 on 1 April 2013 as a result of the creation of Natural Resources Wales, which absorbed Environment Agency Wales staff.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The numbers include those staff directly employed on Environment Agency contracts of employment, either permanent or fixed term. The numbers do not include Employment Agency Staff, Consultants or Contractors.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The figure for January 2014, differs from that included in the reply given to the hon. Member for Garston and Halewood on 24 February 2014, <em>Official Report</em> column 91-92W, where the figure included Employment Agency Staff, Consultants and Contractors staff.
