	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 28/01/2015 answer text <p>The UK is committed to playing its part in ending the scourge of the global illegal wildlife trade, which is why we hosted the London Conference on the illegal wildlife trade in February 2014. The London Conference Declaration contained 25 commitments to action on enforcement and criminal justice, eradicating the market for illegal wildlife products and sustainable livelihoods.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>A report describing the UK’s progress on delivering the commitments made in the London Conference Declaration will be published this spring. We have also designed a £10 million package, over four years, to support international action to tackle the illegal wildlife trade, focused on the themes discussed at the London Conference. As part of this package, 19 projects around the world will receive over £5.3 million through the Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The UK is producing a progress report on behalf of all the countries and Intergovernmental Organisations which adopted the London Conference Declaration. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 15/12/2014 answer text <p>We recognise that the internet can be used as a route for wildlife-related criminal activity, including illegal trade in species covered by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The illegal trade in CITES species is one of the six UK wildlife crime priorities and action to tackle such trade is spearheaded by the UK CITES Priority Delivery Group (CPDG) comprising Border Force, the Metropolitan Police Wildlife Crime Unit and the National Wildlife Crime Unit (NWCU). Defra has provided additional funding to the NWCU this year to conduct research into wildlife crime on the internet and we will be considering the findings of their report.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Powers are available in the UK to tackle illegal internet trade in wildlife products under the Control of Trade in Endangered Species (COTES) legislation. This legislation is currently under review. The review will consider trends in illegal trade and the enforcement practices needed to combat this, including the increasing use of the internet to conduct trade in wildlife products.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>More broadly the National Crime Agency (NCA) focuses on the relentless disruption of serious and organised criminals and those that present the highest risk to the UK and its communities. Where high risk organised criminals are engaged in illegal wildlife trade the NCA will lead, support or coordinate an appropriate level of response. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 14/10/2015 answer text <p>The UK is an active Party to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which regulates trade in over 35,000 species. Trade prohibitions are imposed where they are needed to conserve the long-term survival of a species and commercial trade in the most endangered is generally prohibited. For those where trade is allowed, this is subject to strict regulation and monitoring to ensure that it is sustainable.</p><p>The UK has also played a leading role in galvanising international action to combat the illegal wildlife trade, including of ivory. Related to this we are currently exploring whether any further amendments may be required to COTES, in particular as a result of the proposal announced on 21 September to ban sales of ivory less than seventy years old. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 30/11/2022 answer text <p>The United Kingdom is taking steps to help protect endangered animals and plants from poaching and illegal trade to benefit wildlife, local communities and the economy, and protect global security.</p><p> </p><p>HMG has committed over £46 million between 2014 and 2022 on work to directly counter illegal wildlife trade (IWT), including through the Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund. Our actions include: training border force agents and building capacity through the British military to train rangers and disrupt poaching in targeted African countries; developing behaviour change campaigns to discourage purchases of wildlife products; supporting legislative reform to increase penalties and conviction rates for wildlife crime; and helping communities to protect the wildlife they rely on for their livelihoods.</p><p> </p><p>We are also contributing £250 million to the Global Environment Facility between 2018-2022, which includes the world's biggest fund for tackling IWT, the Global Wildlife Programme (GWP), supporting IWT projects across 32 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. In June this year, at the Stockholm +50 meeting, Lord Goldsmith announced the UK Government’s pledge of £330m to the eighth replenishment of the Global Environment Facility (GEF8) covering the period 2022 – 2026. The GEF8 replenishment delivered a record breaking $5.33bn with a 46% increase in biodiversity funding.
