star this property answer text <p>Monthly catch limits for 2015 were informed by landings data from the three year period 2012-2014. The Government secured a rollover of the 2014 skate and ray quota for 2015, meaning that fishermen will not see a reduction in the volume of fish they may catch this year. The Marine Management Organisation is holding a meeting with key industry representatives in the South West on 21<sup>st</sup> January to discuss and seek input to quota management in this region in 2015.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Defra is in the final stages of a permanent quota realignment exercise which will represent a 14% uplift in the amount of quota the inshore fleet currently receives.</p><br /><p>We have also announced that the inshore fleet will be the principal beneficiaries of any quota uplift received as a result of the introduction of the demersal landing obligation.</p><br /><p>For species subject to the discard ban from January 2016, we have announced that the non-sector pools will receive the first 100 tonnes of any quota uplift received and 10% of any remaining uplift. For 2016 this represents more than 1,000 tonnes of uplift to support the non-sector in their adaptation to the landing obligation and includes key stocks such as haddock, whiting and plaice.</p><br /><p>In the Celtic Sea there will be an estimated additional 126 tonnes of whiting and 142 tonnes of hake to support the non-sector.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>I have discussed the implications of the Landing Obligation and possible problems regarding choke species with a number of fishing industry representatives including from the Cornwall Fish Producers Organisation, where concerns over the gadoid fishery in the Celtic sea were raised.</p><p> </p><p>The UK has put forward proposals for mitigation measures which have been included in the join recommendations submitted by the North Sea and North Western Water regional groups to the Commission in May 2018. Other mitigation measures will be developed in discussion with the European Commission and Member States over the next few months for possible inclusion in the annual TAC and Quota Regulation to be agreed at December Council. I had a bilateral meeting with Commissioner Vella to discuss the specific challenge of choke species during the Fisheries Council in Luxembourg on the 18<sup>th</sup> July.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The new catch recording requirements are due to come into force in summer 2019 and where possible they will replace existing catch recording documents such as the paper shellfish return. Landing declarations are not currently required from under 10 metre vessels and, following an industry consultation, this will continue to be the case under the new catch recording requirements. Total Allowable Catches (TACs) for 2019 and beyond will be based on catch advice from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), which will reflect the fact that species subject to the landing obligation will no longer be discarded.</p><p> </p><p>The UK Government remains fully committed to sustainable fisheries management which will continue when we leave the EU, with TACs set in line with the science and ending the wasteful practice of discarding.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p><strong> </strong></p><p> </p>

star this property answer text <p> </p><p>Determination of catches according to depth criteria and the time vessels fish at particular depths is labour intensive and requires extensive spatial analysis of catch records and vessel activity within a geographical information system. From analysis related to the EU deep sea access regime update discussions, we have provisional catch and vessel data available covering 2006 – 2012 (see tables attached). This covers total annual catches (all species) and the proportion of these caught below 600m, and vessels targeting deep sea species at depths greater than 600m. We have not carried out similar analysis related to depths greater than 800m or covering 2013. Quota is not allocated to Member States under the EU deep sea access regime.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p> more like this
