	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 13/10/2016 answer text <p>The Government is deeply concerned by the continued poaching of elephants for their ivory, which is why we are committed to maintaining the current global ban on any international trade in new ivory. The UK has made no formal assessment of the impact of other countries’ additional measures to restrict trade in ivory. However, as a further step in delivering the Government’s manifesto commitment to press for a total ban on ivory sales, on 21 September the Secretary of State announced plans for a ban on sales of items containing ivory dated between 1947 and the present day, putting UK rules on ivory sales among the world’s toughest. We will consult on plans for the ban early next year. This will complement the existing UK approach not to permit the trade of raw ivory tusks.</p><p> </p><p>The Government also successfully lobbied for the EU-wide adoption of the existing UK ban on sales of raw ivory tusks, which was advocated through the EU Council Conclusions on an EU Action Plan on Wildlife Trafficking and adopted in June. This urged EU Member States not to issue export or re-export documents under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) for raw, pre-Convention ivory (pre-1990) and to consider further measures to put a halt to commercial trade in ivory from elephants.</p><p> </p><p>At the CITES Conference that took place from 24 September to 5 October the UK was involved in negotiations that successfully secured a strong agreement calling for the closure of domestic ivory markets where they contribute to poaching or illegal trade. The Secretary of State may, as he sees fit, instruct Natural England in respect to the discharge of this function and he may also choose to make the final determination of a licence himself.</p><p>There is a Forestry Commission proposal to release beavers into a fenced enclosure in the Forest of Dean near Lydbrook. This project would require a conditional licence allowing release into a secure enclosure. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 25/10/2016 answer text <p>Since 2008, the Water Vole Database and Mapping Project has managed and stored water vole survey records, as well collating data on American mink. This has enabled mapping of this data and effective use of the datasets for the benefit of water vole populations. The map on page 66 of the 2014 report, found at <a href="http://www.wildlifetrusts.org/watervole-project" target="_blank">http://www.wildlifetrusts.org/watervole-project</a>, indicates a thriving population of water vole in the Lindsey Marshes. The data for East Lindsey can be requested from the Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre.</p><p> </p><p>The project does not itself involve assessing the effect of one species on another but the presence of American mink is the most significant factor in the decline of the water vole. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 05/09/2017 answer text <p>Tackling the illegal wildlife trade and bringing an end to elephant poaching is a priority for this government.</p><p> </p><p>We are taking practical action to tackle the illegal wildlife trade, particularly through the Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund. Many projects funded through the challenge fund work to protect elephants from poaching. Defra also funds the British Army training for park ranges in key African countries. UK law enforcement agencies are active around the world, sharing expertise and intelligence to help tackle poaching and trafficking.</p><p> </p><p>Here in the UK there are strict rules controlling the sale of ivory. This is backed up by robust enforcement from Border Force and the National Wildlife Crime Unit. The UK prohibits all commercial trade in raw ivory of any age, going further than the EU regulations. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 09/03/2017 answer text <p>In December 2015 the Government announced that it would require five cities (Birmingham, Derby, Leeds, Nottingham and Southampton) to implement a Clean Air Zone.</p><p> </p><p>A Clean Air Zone defines an area where targeted action is taken to improve air quality and where resources are prioritised and coordinated to deliver improved health benefits and support economic growth in the urban environment.
