This means that non-UK EU citizens from Cyprus, Malta and the RoI are eligible to serve in the UK Regular Armed Forces. For some specialisations (e.g. Submarine service), candidates must hold British nationality only. However, the Armed Forces currently have a disability exemption from the Equality Act 2010 because of their requirement to achieve and maintain operational effectiveness, part of which rests on the need for all personnel to be interoperable and able to carry out a wide range of functions frequently at short notice.
