unstar this property answer text <p>The RAF's Air Surveillance and Control System at RAF Boulmer is fully integrated with NATO allies and the NATO Combined Air Operations Centre at Uedem in Germany, which manages NATO's response to such activity. This allows NATO to react in good time to aircraft approaching the airspace of both the UK and our NATO allies.</p><p>I am withholding details of the number of occasions Russian military aircraft were detected approaching UK airspace. The disclosure of this information would reveal details of the air defence of the UK which would be likely to prejudice the capability, effectiveness or security of the Armed Forces.</p><p>However, Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) aircraft from RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Coningsby launched to intercept Russian military aircraft approaching UK airspace on five days in 2016 and three days in 2017<em>.</em></p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>There have been no unauthorised incursions by Russian military aircraft into sovereign airspace around the UK, which projects 12 miles off the shore or to a mutually agreed mid-point between adjacent nations, as in the Straits of Dover.</p><p>Russian state registered aircraft, which may include military aircraft, can transit through UK sovereign airspace but must apply for diplomatic clearance in advance on a case by case basis and adhere to an approved flight plan with civil air traffic control authorities.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <br /><p>In the last 12 months there have been no unauthorised incursions by any foreign military aircraft into sovereign UK air space, which projects 12 miles off shore or to mutually agreed mid-points between adjacent nations over narrow straits such as the Straits of Dover. Russian military aircraft activity has remained in international airspace at all times. The UK civil air traffic region and the NATO Air Policing Area, for which the UK have responsibility for monitoring, include large areas of international air space through which foreign military traffic may legally transit.</p><br /><br /> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>Russian military aviation has never entered British Sovereign Airspace without permission.</p><p>The RAF has identified, intercepted and escorted Russian military aircraft transiting through international airspace in the vicinity of the UK. Russian military flights can present a potential safety concern to other airspace users because of their practice of not communicating with air traffic control agencies with regard to their intentions, not filing a flight plan or not transmitting a recognisable secondary surveillance radar transponder code. Their activity therefore needs careful monitoring, which is why we intercept such flights.</p><p>The UK works closely with our Allies to keep NATO's airspace safe and secure and to enable a co-ordinated NATO air policing response.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text In accordance with the Open Skies Treaty, Russian military personnel, accompanied throughout by RAF personnel, conducted observation flights over the UK during the weeks of 11 May and 1 June 2015. The aircraft involved was unarmed and pre-certified by all Open Skies states. It flew on a flight plan authorised by the Ministry of Defence, in this case including over Lancashire, and the UK received copies of all photographs taken. The UK conducts similar missions in Russia. more like this
