This allows NATO to react in good time to aircraft approaching the airspace of both the UK and our NATO allies.</p><p>I am withholding details of the number of occasions Russian military aircraft were detected approaching UK airspace. Russian military aircraft activity has remained in international airspace at all times. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 17/09/2015 answer text <p>Russian military aviation has never entered British Sovereign Airspace without permission.</p><p>The RAF has identified, intercepted and escorted Russian military aircraft transiting through international airspace in the vicinity of the UK. Russian military flights can present a potential safety concern to other airspace users because of their practice of not communicating with air traffic control agencies with regard to their intentions, not filing a flight plan or not transmitting a recognisable secondary surveillance radar transponder code. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 08/06/2015 answer text In accordance with the Open Skies Treaty, Russian military personnel, accompanied throughout by RAF personnel, conducted observation flights over the UK during the weeks of 11 May and 1 June 2015. The aircraft involved was unarmed and pre-certified by all Open Skies states. It flew on a flight plan authorised by the Ministry of Defence, in this case including over Lancashire, and the UK received copies of all photographs taken.
