There are 29 command appointments at one-star level and above within the Royal Navy, 42 within the Army, 18 within the Royal Air Force and 26 within Strategic Command. The table below shows a breakdown by role although for security reasons two Strategic Command posts are not included. While broadly similar, the three services and Strategic Command use slightly different criteria for 'command appointments' because of their structural differences. Senior service officers also hold command appointments in roles outside of their service, for example in NATO. There are also non-command appointments at one-star level and above, both within and external to the single services. The Government appreciates the courage shown and sacrifices made by all our brave Service men and women, including those who have served in the Submarine Service as part of Operation Relentless. However, there are no plans to introduce a special service medal. Since 2010, our submariners receive the Deterrent Patrol Pin recognising the professionalism, dedication and commitment displayed by those who have deployed on ballistic missile submarine patrols. Former members of the Service are entitled, and encouraged, to apply for the pin in recognition of their previous service.

We are currently working across Government to decide what would be appropriate for other parts of the public sector to sign up to, given the variety of organisations involved. The Defence Scientific and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) is leading the Ministry of Defence's research in this area, working with the US Department of Defense to accelerate and demonstrate the effective use of new robotic and autonomous systems technologies. This includes the 'Last Mile Challenge' innovation initiative which has challenged industry and academia to look at how delivery drones and resupply robots can provide vital reinforcements to frontline troops. The challenge is worth a total of £3.8 million over the next 12 months with prototypes being built for demonstration later this year. Four of the five successful organisations are British-led with a wide range of sub-contractors from small and medium sized enterprises, industry and academia. These capabilities and other emerging military technologies will be tested and evaluated at the Autonomous Warrior, Army Warfighting Exercise in November 2018. The exercise, which involves all three Services, DSTL, the US Army and around 50 industry participants, will test a range of research projects including in surveillance, long-range and precision targeting, enhancing mobility and the re-supply of forces, urban warfare and enhanced situational awareness. The lessons identified will support decision making for future investment in ground-breaking technology and innovation to ensure the Army and British industry remain at the cutting edge of technology and combat tactics.

Whilst the UK has not given specific military or logistic assistance to the fighters of People's Protection Units in Kobane, the UK is a major contributor to the wider global coalition working to counter ISIL across Iraq and Syria, which has assisted the Kurdish force to liberate and defend the area.Whilst UK intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft have been deployed over Syria, the Government has made it clear that it would seek further Parliamentary approval before UK aircraft conducted air strikes in Syria, unless there was a critical British interest at stake or a need to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe.

A copy of the list showing the land and buildings that are in the process of being disposed of by the Ministry of Defence has been placed in the Library of the House. The majority of these sites are still occupied whilst being prepared for disposal. However, 25 part or whole sites are currently vacant and have been physically handed over to Defence Infrastructure Organisation for disposal.
