They also covered the hunger strikes in support of Abdullah Öcalan by Kurdish prisoners, including Leyla Guven MP. We are pleased to note that she was recently released from prison. We expect the Turkish authorities to ensure that prisoners' human rights are observed, including access to medical treatment.</p>

It will take place along-side the first Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the AU and the African Regional Economic Communities on 7-8 July. Attendance at such events by partners like the United Kingdom is by invitation. The Government's priorities for the AU are reflected in the strategic partnership agreement between the AU and the United Kingdom signed in Addis Ababa on 21 February 2019. Through this partnership we will work together to support a shared vision for a prosperous, secure and innovative Africa, building on growing economic ties to forge new opportunities for young people and reinforce our close bonds. An Advisory Opinion is not a judgment. We are considering the detail carefully, including consulting cross-Whitehall and with our overseas posts. The defence facilities on the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) help to protect people here in Britain and around the world from terrorist threats, organised crime and piracy. The UK has a longstanding commitment to cede sovereignty over BIOT when we no longer need the territory to help keep us and others safe.</p>

The UK is clear that the Burmese military must adhere to international standards and that there must be accountability and justice for any human rights abuses such as those reported in Rakhine, Kachin and Shan States in the UN Fact Finding Mission report.</p>

The main vehicle for the UK's support to the peace process, the Joint Peace Fund, has undergone a thorough independent assessment of progress and challenges. Our peace building programme in Burma is reviewed annually. The UK will continue our support for the peace process through technical advice and expertise. We have been clear that Burmese military conduct in states such as Shan, Kachin and in the south-east is under international scrutiny, as in Rakhine.</p><p> </p>

	answer	answer answer text <p>I set out UK concerns on the recent increase in violence in Rakhine State between the Burmese military and the Arakan Army in a statement on 18 January. We regularly raise concerns with the Burmese regime about conflicts in Burma, calling on all parties to cease fighting and allow access for humanitarian aid. International attention and diplomatic initiatives can play a role in limiting violence and promoting responsible conduct but an agreed peace settlement is the best way to bring about a sustainable end to violence. The UK will continue to support the peace process in Burma.</p>
