unstar this property answer text

Under the deployment plan the Ministry of Defence and police have identified a range of security tasks that the military will undertake in order to release police firearms officers to respond to a major counter-terrorism (CT) incident. A proportion of these are in Scotland although we do not reveal the specific numbers of personnel involved for reasons of operational security.

The plan also allows us to generate a far more significant surge of military personnel to deploy in response to a major CT incident. These personnel deploy across the UK, including in Scotland. Military units have a responsibility for this task on a rolling basis, including the 9,810 personnel based in Scotland.
more like this

unstar this property answer text
No Army recruitment offices have been closed in the UK or Scotland in the last 12 months. There are currently 74 recruiting offices in the UK, of which five are in Scotland. A trial is currently being conducted into the deployment of mobile careers centres at locations throughout the UK, including Scotland.

Whilst physical recruitment offices do have a role to play, research shows that today's target audience is twice as likely to look online for career guidance and advice. Given the improved digital access and contact that we now provide, a number of Army recruiting offices were closed in 2012 and 2013. However, there remains a recruiting office within a reasonable travelling distance of over 90% of the target population.

more like this

unstar this property answer text
The Armed Forces never visit schools for recruitment purposes and would only ever visit a school after being invited by a teacher to support school activities. Similar contributions to schools are made by the Police, Fire, Ambulance and other emergency services. The Armed Forces receive numerous requests from schools each year and the three Services take these opportunities to both explain their role, and to assist schools in teaching valuable skills such as leadership, teamwork and citizenship.

These visits can comprise presentations, citizenship talks, meetings with staff, participation in career events, practice interviews and activities with the students, such as science and maths challenges, and other indoor or outdoor exercises.

Information on the number of visits by the Royal Navy and the Army to secondary schools is presented below, by Financial Year (FY); the category of secondary educational establishment (such as state or independent) is not recorded.
