	answer	answer is ministerial correction answer text <p>Ofsted undertakes a review of each local safeguarding children’s board (LSCB) at the same time as they undertake their inspection of local authorities’ services for children in need of help and protection and looked after children. Neither the review nor the inspection makes specific judgements about the sexual exploitation of children or the effectiveness of the local child sexual exploitation action plans. However, inspectors are required to include in the cases they evaluate “children at risk of harm from physical, emotional and sexual abuse and neglect; inspectors will also want to identify those children and young people where the local authority have concerns that they may be vulnerable to child sexual exploitation and those children and young people who have been missing from care, home and education”. In undertaking the LSCB review inspectors are required to “evaluate the quality and impact of the policies and procedures produced by the LSCB, such as the local thresholds document and the child sexual exploitation action plan.” An LSCB’s response to child sexual exploitation is considered as part of the overall judgement on the performance of the LSCB. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction answer text <p>In 2012 the Department for Education published ‘Safeguarding Children across Services: Messages from Research’ by Ward and Davies. This report pulls together a wide-ranging body of existing research on safeguarding children from abuse and neglect and provides a valuable summary of the impact of neglect on children, including their mental health.[1]</p><p>In 2013 the Department published a new analysis of the association between stressful life events and adolescent outcomes, drawing on two existing longitudinal studies; the Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) and the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC).[2] More recently, we published an up-to-date review by Ward et al on the impact of maltreatment on child development, including social, emotional and behavioural development.[3]</p><p>Earlier this year the Department published a study focusing specifically on adopted children and their well-being post-adoption.[4] We are currently finalising a similar report focusing specifically on children cared for by Special Guardians; this is due to be published later in the year.</p><p>The Department has commissioned a follow-up for one of the studies originally funded by the Safeguarding Research Initiative: the ‘Significant Harm of Infants study’<em>.</em> This study was set up to explore how decisions made by practitioners have influenced the life pathways of 57 young children who were identified as suffering, or likely to suffer, significant harm before their first birthdays. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction answer text <p>Preventing extremism in all schools is a priority for the Government, and the Department for Education established a dedicated Due Diligence and Counter Extremism Division (previously known as the Preventing Extremism Unit) in October 2010 to oversee this work.</p><p> </p><p>The Division’s aim is to ensure that children and young people in England are safeguarded from extremists and extremist views in schools or in out of school hours learning, and prevent young people from becoming radicalised or acting on extreme views. The Division is staffed by civil servants with support from specialists with expertise in security matters.</p><p> </p><p>Schools can help protect children from extremist and violent views in the same ways that they help to safeguard children from drugs, gang violence or alcohol abuse. Schools’ work on the Government’s Prevent strategy needs to be seen in this context. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction answer text <p>Pupil premium funding is allocated to state-funded schools for each financial year rather than by school year, primarily on the basis of the number of pupils recorded in the January school census as having been registered for free school meals (FSM) at any point in the last 6 years. A smaller proportion of pupils attract the pupil premium on the basis of being looked after, or having left care through adoption or under a Special Guardianship, Residence or Child Arrangements Order.</p><p>The Department for Education has published illustrative pupil premium funding allocations for the financial year 2014-15, based on census data from 2013. Final allocations for 2014-15 will be published later in the year, based on pupil data gathered through the January 2014 school census and the spring 2014 children looked after data return (and also the October 2014 school census, for adopted and other previously looked after pupils who were not recorded as such in the January 2014 school census).</p><p>From the data on which the published illustrative allocations for 2014-15 are based, the Department estimates that 430,350 pupils in reception, year 1 and year 2 will attract pupil premium funding on the basis of having been registered for FSM at any point in the last 6 years.</p><p>Pupil premium final allocations for the financial year 2015-16 will be based on pupil data gathered through the forthcoming January 2015 school census and the spring 2015 children looked after data return. Final allocations for 2015-16 will be published towards the end of 2015. To ensure we have the best estimates, we are working with primary schools and local authorities so that registration rates for benefits-related FSM are maintained for pupils in reception, year 1 and year 2 classes.</p> question first answered 21/10/2014 13:46:51
