	answer	answer answer text <p>In March, we published ‘Preventing suicide in England: fifth progress report of the cross-government outcomes strategy to save lives’<em>. </em>It includes an update on work across the Department and NHS England and NHS Improvement to reduce suicide rates amongst groups with specific needs and characteristics that may expose them to more risk factors for suicide, including autism.</p><p> </p><p>This work includes NHS England and NHS Improvement’s refreshed approach to the Learning Disability Mortality Review (LeDeR) programme, ‘Learning from lives and deaths - people with a learning disability and autistic people’. The LeDeR aims to improve care, reduce heath inequalities and prevent premature mortality of people with a learning disability and autistic people by reviewing information about the health and social care support that people received.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p>We also published the Mental Health and Wellbeing Recovery Plan, setting out our response to the mental health impacts of the pandemic. Many of the actions in the Plan will support people at risk of self-harm or suicide, including autistic people. The Plan is backed by an additional £500 million, including £5 million to support suicide prevention organisations in 2021/22.</p><p> </p>

	answer	answer answer text <p>The fourth progress report of the cross-Government suicide prevention strategy recognises autistic people as a high-risk group, and the NHS Long Term Plan reaffirms the National Health Service’s commitment to make suicide prevention a priority over the next decade. This Plan will see investment in all areas of the country by 2023/24 to support local suicide prevention plans and establish suicide bereavement support services.</p><p> </p><p>We are also revisiting the work to refresh the autism strategy, working closely with the Department for Education and other Government departments. As part of this work and as a key priority, we will consider what further action can be taken to support autistic children and young people to maintain good mental health and to prevent instances of suicide.</p><p> </p><p> </p>

	answer	answer answer text <p>Information on the number of people diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum; the number of people on the autistic spectrum who have been diagnosed with having an anxiety disorder or depression; the number of people with autism who took their own lives, and the number of people with autism who have died within the requested timescales is not available centrally.</p><p> </p><p>We have made no assessment of the effectiveness of tools used in the diagnosis of autism in identifying co-existing mental health problems. The use of such tools is a matter for the clinicians concerned, taking into account relevant clinical guidance such as that published by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.</p>

The guidance states the importance of developing multi-agency suicide prevention groups to ensure that local suicide prevention plans are informed by local intelligence and the needs of the local community. PHE is currently refreshing this guidance.</p><p>We welcomed the independent Mental Health Taskforce recommendation to ensure that all local areas have multi-agency suicide prevention plans in place by 2017.</p><p>The National Suicide Prevention Strategy (2012) stated that accessible, high-quality mental health services are fundamental to reducing the risk of suicide in people of all ages with mental health problems.</p><p>Last year, NHS England commissioned the world's first Learning Disability Mortality Review Programme to support local areas to review deaths of people with learning disabilities and to use the information to improve service provision so that physical and mental health problems can be identified and addressed. The process is currently being piloted in the North East and Cumbria.</p><p>We have made monumental strides in the way we help manage conditions such as autism in this country and that is why we are working alongside people with autism, and their carers,</p><p>to make sure they have access to healthcare with adjustments made for their conditions. This is a focus of the Cross Government Autism Strategy which was revised in 2014 as Think Autism.</p>
