	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 27/02/2020 answer text <p>The Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland is underpinned by the right of Northern Ireland to withdraw its consent from the continued application of EU law.</p><p> </p><p>The detail of this arrangement is set out in the Government’s Unilateral Declaration of 17 October 2019. This sets out that the first consent decision will be taken in the two months before the end of the first four-year period after the end of the implementation period.</p><p> </p><p>If the Assembly votes by simple majority against continued alignment, then Northern Ireland’s alignment with EU law will come to an end two years later. If the Assembly votes in favour of continued alignment, then Northern Ireland’s alignment with EU law will continue.</p><p> </p><p>If this decision is made on the basis of a simple majority, a further consent decision will be required within four years. We are working closely with businesses and communities to ensure that action is taken now.</p><p> </p><p>As well as regular meetings of the Business Engagement Forum, led by my department, we are in constant contact with communities in Northern Ireland. Last month the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland chaired a roundtable with civic leaders from across Northern Ireland, facilitating a really valuable two-way dialogue on readiness. It delivers on the commitments we made to the people of Northern Ireland, maintaining unfettered access, protecting Northern Ireland’s place in the UK Customs Territory, and ensuring that Great Britain to Northern Ireland trade flows as smoothly as possible.</p><p> </p><p>The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland is in constant contact with the Executive on matters relating to the Protocol, as was the case throughout the Transition Period. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 16/03/2021 answer text <p>In January of this year, the Irish Government implemented a temporary easement for businesses experiencing difficulties in lodging entry summary declarations for roll on roll off goods movements.</p><p> </p><p>The UK Government remains committed to meeting our obligations in the Protocol in the pragmatic and proportionate way intended - taking account of the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement in all its dimensions, North-South and East-West. It is common trade practice - adopted by countries internationally - to temporarily delay the implementation of certain obligations for sensible practical and operational reasons. For the Protocol to succeed, it must command the enduring support of all communities.</p><p> </p><p>The Government has provided a proposed work programme to the EU as the first step in working jointly to make progress across the full range of issues identified. Our priority is now to move those discussions forward, address concerns, and ensure the Protocol is given effect in the pragmatic and proportionate way intended.</p><p> </p><p>The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and I continue to meet with community leaders to ensure that the views of people in Northern Ireland are heard throughout this process. These experiences have also been set out to me in writing as correspondence and as reports for individuals businesses and business representative organisations.</p><p> </p><p>I have heard first-hand about the range of experiences under the Protocol as it is currently operating for people and businesses in Northern Ireland.
