star this property answer text
The earliest adopters of new technologies can gain a first-mover advantage, allowing them to reap rewards in terms of additional jobs and increased revenue.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are distinct technologies. ‘AI’ describes where computers are able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, decision-making and translation between languages; ‘machine learning’ comprises deeper learning where computers are able o learn without external programming, building on algorithms that can make predictions using data. However, for the purposes of identifying support for and development in the sector, it is useful to treat them as a group.

Government welcomes the independent review of Artificial Intelligence, “Growing the Artificial Intelligence Industry in the UK”, published on 15 October. The report highlights how AI can boost UK productivity, and has the potential to add £630 billion to the UK economy by 2035.

The Industrial Strategy Green Paper, published in January, also identified AI as a major, high-potential opportunity for the UK to build a word-leading future sector of our economy.

Since 2010 we have invested over half a trillion pounds in capital investment, cut taxes to support business investment and reformed technical education. The Autumn Budget sets out the next steps the government is taking to improve productivity. We are extending the National Productivity Investment Fund, increasing support for R&D to its highest level in 30 years by 2021/22, transforming lifelong learning and responding to the Patient Capital Review that we commissioned.

more like this

star this property answer text
Thriving at Work; The Stevenson/Farmer Review of mental health and employers, published in October 2017, sets out a compelling business case for employers to support their staff’s mental health. In the review, an independent study on the cost to employers of poor employee mental health commissioned from Deloitte found that:

There is a large annual cost to employers of between £33 billion and £42 billion (with over half of the cost coming from presenteeism – when individuals are less productive due to poor mental health in work) with additional costs from sickness absence and staff turnover.

The cost of poor mental health to Government is between £24 billion and £27 billion. This includes costs in providing benefits, falls in tax revenue and costs to the NHS.

The cost of poor mental health to the economy as a whole is more than both of those together from lost output, at between £74 billion and £99 billion per year.

The Government’s full response to the review is included in Improving Lives: The Future of Work Health and Disability where we set out a broad ranging strategy to further support disabled people and people with health conditions – including mental health conditions - to enter and thrive in work.
