	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 01/09/2014 answer text <p>The Government recognises that online sources of energy usage information can be useful but does not believe that these can substitute for in-home displays in delivering the benefits of smart meters.</p><p>In home displays allow consumers and their family members to see immediately their current and historic energy use and its cost in near-real time and do not rely on consumers having internet access or smart phones. Current evidence shows higher energy savings from those with a smart meter and IHD compared to those with a smart meter only.</p><p>Energy suppliers are free to offer additional means for their customers to engage with their energy usage, which may be available online and offer different forms of analysis to the IHD. Energy suppliers are required to take ‘all reasonable steps' to install smart meters to all of their domestic and smaller non-domestic customers in Wales, England and Scotland by 2020.</p><p>There is no centralised roll-out strategy and suppliers are free to plan the roll-out in a way that suits their business and the needs of their customers, subject to the requirement to complete the roll-out by 2020. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 22/07/2014 answer text <p>In order to protect consumers and ensure that they have choices over who can access their energy data and for what purposes, the Government has established a data access and privacy regulatory framework</p><p>Energy suppliers will be able to access their own customers’ monthly consumption data for billing and for the purposes of fulfilling any statutory requirement or licence obligations. Consumers will be able to choose whether or not to permit energy suppliers to access data on their daily or half-hourly consumption of energy.</p><p>Network operators will be permitted to access monthly consumption data for the purpose of developing and maintaining efficient, co-ordinated and economical systems for the distribution of electricity and gas. Ofgem is responsible for ensuring compliance with this obligation and monitor suppliers to ensure that they abide by their licence conditions.
