answer text
It is the responsibility of individual ministers to decide what answers they give to Questions for Written Answer (QWAs), and they are of course accountable to the House for those answers. The importance of this direct accountability is such that I recently decided, following the introduction of a new system for answering QWAs electronically, to require Ministers in this House to continue providing personally signed answers to noble Lords. The Ministerial Code states that “It is of paramount importance that Ministers give accurate and truthful information to Parliament”.

more like this

answer text
Through the Environmental Protection (Restriction on Use of Lead Shot) (England) Regulations 1999, the use of lead shot ammunition is restricted to protect waterfowl from lead poisoning. Its use is banned on all foreshores, certain Sites of Special Scientific Interest and for the shooting of all ducks and geese, coot and moorhen. The supply of lead weights for fishing is also prohibited. One recent piece of research suggests compliance with the Regulations is relatively low with around 70% of wild duck carcasses bought from game dealers in England having been shot with lead ammunition. We will continue to look at how the Lead Shot Regulations can be better implemented.
more like this

answer text
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) wrote to the Department on 8 June 2022 requesting the referral of Evusheld for the treatment of COVID-19 for inclusion into its multiple technology appraisal on therapeutics for COVID-19. This was different and unrelated to the referral letter sent by the Department to NICE on 10 August 2022, which was for Evusheld for prophylaxis.

Following the referral, NICE has prioritised the appraisal of Evusheld for the prevention of COVID-19 and issued its draft guidance for consultation on 16 February 2023. NICE has been unable to recommend its use to protect against COVID-19 citing the lack of its clinical evidence against current variants and those likely to be circulating in the near future. Stakeholders now have until 9 March 2023 to comment on NICE’s draft recommendations.
more like this

answer text
Reporting processes agreed at the UN mean that it is the national statistics office of each Member State that is responsible for reporting national data to the UN on progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. In the UK, this role is undertaken by the independent Office for National Statistics, which carried out a public consultation on its approach to reporting last summer.

The Government is committed to delivering the Sustainable Development Goals and has embedded the Goals across all of its work. We will present the UK’s voluntary national review of progress towards the Goals in 2019, and will be consulting with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including civil society organisations, as we develop our plans.

Civil society organisations have a vital role to play with regard to both contributing to delivery of the Goals to ensure no-one is left behind, and in communicating their importance to keep up momentum on implementation.

For example, the Leave No One Behind Partnership, founded by CIVICUS, Project Everyone and Development Initiatives with DFID support, has supported national dialogues with civil society platforms in thirty countries to raise awareness of the Goals, as well as discuss priorities and good practice for delivery. We are keen to ensure these important contributions are captured.
