There are currently around 26,100 primary teachers in state schools with science-related degrees (11.5%). We promote primary teaching to science graduates through our “Get into Teaching” campaign as well as supporting 500 primary places to Teach First which recruits top graduates into teaching.</p><p>In addition to initial teacher training, we are supporting a number of initiatives to improve the science knowledge of existing primary teachers. There are 266 Specialist Leaders of Education in science who are boosting other teachers’ knowledge across the country. We are also collaborating with the Wellcome Trust who are developing a programme for primary science teachers to strengthen further their expertise. To ensure that the data is sufficiently robust before it is put to any further use, I asked officials to share the data that we had gathered with schools and responsible bodies and rectify any significant variances in the dataset.</p><p>The deadline for feedback from schools and responsible bodies has recently passed and officials are considering where the survey information needs to be updated. This is the biggest step towards fairer schools funding in a decade. This was an assessment of what local authorities needed to fund education rather than what they spent. The DSG is based largely on an authority's previous spending. In addition, the DSG has a different coverage to EFS. EFS comprised a schools block and a local education authority (LEA) block (to cover LEA central functions) whereas DSG only covers the EFS school block. LEA block items are still funded through DCLG's local government finance settlement but education items cannot be separately identified. Consequently, there is a break in the department's time series as the two sets of data are not comparable.</p><p>To provide a comparison for 2006-07 DSG, the Department has isolated the EFS school block equivalent funding in 2005-06; as described above this does not represent the totality of ‘education' funding in that year.</p><p>Figures for financial years 2005 to 2013 are shown below. Most of the additional grants were mainstreamed into DSG in 2011-12.</p><p>With the changes to DSG funding in financial year 2013 to 2014, i.e. funding allocated through three blocks, namely schools, early years and high needs, there is no longer a comparable overall figure with previous years. In 2011-12, the Premium was allocated for each pupil known to be eligible for Free School Meals, looked after children and children of parents in the armed services. In 2012-13 coverage was expanded to include pupils known to have been eligible for Free School Meals at any point in the last six years. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 21/02/2022 answer text <p>The department will continue to monitor and take targeted action in areas with low levels of tutoring. A second application round for tutoring organisations in November was designed to increase capacity in these areas. These organisations are now in post and active, focused on increasing capacity and delivery in these areas from January 2022. For example, in the North East there were previously three accredited tutoring organisations, this has <ins class="ministerial">increased to nine</ins> <del class="ministerial">doubled to six</del>, making tutoring far more accessible to schools and increasing capacity. Randstad has bespoke communication plans for each region, the department continues to refine these with Randstad so that all useful channels, including local press, are fully engaged.</p><p>National participation data has been published for the first term of this year; the department has committed to publish participation data on a regular basis to explain the programme's progress.
