We raise our concerns at the highest levels of the Chinese government. The Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary both raised human rights in their recent introductory discussions with President Xi and Foreign Minister Wang.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>On 26 July, the Foreign Secretary met China's Director of Foreign Affairs Commission Office and Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers meeting in Vientiane, Laos. The Foreign Secretary outlined this government's vision for a long-term, consistent and strategic approach to UK-China relations. He set out that the government would cooperate where we can, compete where needed and challenge where we must. The Foreign Secretary made clear this government will stand firm in its support for upholding human rights, underlined the importance of Hong Kong to the UK and raised the case of British national Jimmy Lai.</p> more like this

We regularly engage with UK businesses operating in China, including Hong Kong. UK-listed companies operating in Hong Kong are required to cover relevant human rights issues as part of their annual corporate reporting. The Government has also taken a number of measures to help ensure that UK businesses are not complicit in human rights violations occurring in China. This includes new guidance for UK businesses and enhanced export controls.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Her Majesty's Government (HMG) have robust processes in place to ensure that all projects funded by UK aid meet our human rights obligations and values. This includes publicly available HMG guidance that sets out the human rights risks that must be considered prior to providing any justice or security sector assistance.</p><p>We are aware of concerns raised by a recent report from Freedom from Torture regarding a British Council partnership with London Policing College (LPC). This project was part of a regional programme that included efforts to reduce human rights violations and other malpractice through better policing. This project did not involve the Xinjiang Policing College or any other public security entities in Xinjiang, and no funds were distributed to any overseas institutions.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>We have always been clear the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights must be granted full, unfettered access to Xinjiang and allowed to conduct an accurate assessment of the facts on the ground. We continue to urge China to grant the High Commissioner such access on her ongoing visit, which we are following closely. As the Foreign Secretary made clear in her statement of 24 May, if such access is not forthcoming, the visit will only serve to highlight China's attempts to hide the truth of its actions in Xinjiang. We look forward to the High Commissioner's promised report on the situation in Xinjiang, which we will study carefully. We will continue to act with our international partners to increase the pressure on China to change its behaviour.</p> more like this
