star this property answer text <p>The Department published new National Health Service patient, visitor and staff car parking principles on 23 August 2014. These principles, widely welcomed by a range of charities and organisations representing patients’ interests, made it clear that NHS trusts should provide concessions, including free or reduced charges or caps, to the following groups:</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>- people with disabilities;</p><p> </p><p>- frequent outpatient attenders;</p><p> </p><p>- visitors with relatives who are gravely ill;</p><p> </p><p>- visitors to relatives who have an extended stay in hospital; and</p><p> </p><p>- staff working shifts that mean public transport cannot be used.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Therefore, families of long-term hospital patients should be able to take advantage of the concessions for visitors to relatives who have an extended stay in hospital.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Department has not consulted on the appropriateness of parking fines issued in National Health Service hospital car parks.</p><p> </p><p>The level and appropriateness of car parking charges at NHS sites is the responsibility of the local NHS trust. As set out in the NHS Car Parking Principles we have always made clear that staff, patients and their families should not have to deal with the stress of complex and unfair charges. These were based on discussions with interested parties including NHS trusts and patients’ organisations.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The matter of hospital car parking is devolved in Northern Ireland and it would not be appropriate for the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland to intervene.</p><p><br>In the absence of devolved government it remains for NI Permanent Secretaries to take the decisions they believe necessary in line with the guidance the Secretary of State set out last November, to keep the country running.</p> more like this

The results will be published so that patients can identify those trusts who are falling short.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Guidance to support the NHS in delivering the principles is scheduled for publication in March 2015.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>
