	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 19/06/2014 answer text <p>Public Health England (PHE) was advised that the work undertaken at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has been reviewed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health, in keeping with the institute's implementation of the United States Government Policy for Oversight of Life Sciences Dual Use Research of Concern.</p><p> </p><p>As part of this, PHE understand that the research was carried out in secure facilities with high levels of containment. A key finding of the research was that people vaccinated with the current seasonal influenza vaccine (which protects against 2009 H1N1 influenza, a related virus) had some evidence of protection against the novel virus that had been created. In addition, the team showed that the novel transmissible virus is expected to be sensitive to the antiviral medication oseltamivir. Effective counter measures to this novel virus are therefore available.</p><p> </p><p>This research provides information on the mechanisms responsible for adaptation of avian influenza viruses to mammals. These systems look to determine the level of influenza-like illness in the community and provide this information to relevant organisations and government departments. Public Health England is responsible for monitoring data on influenza activity on a weekly basis during the winter months, and this data is carefully assessed on an ongoing basis. Current data shows low levels of flu activity.</p><p> </p><p>Monitoring enables prompt identification of any increases in influenza activity to forewarn communities and the specific influenza strains involved and any changes in the virus. This information informs public health recommendations to clinicians, such as the use of antivirals in primary care and the management of seasonal influenza on respiratory health. Maximising uptake of flu immunisation, including amongst those with chronic respiratory disease, remains a key strategy.</p><p> </p><p>International surveillance data identifies trends in seasonal influenza across different parts of the world. The current influenza vaccines have generally provided an important level of protection to elderly people.</p><p> </p><p>Influenza vaccines are authorised for use in the United Kingdom following a thorough review of efficacy, safety and quality by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency or the European Medicines Agency. NHS winter plans for 2018-19 were published by NHS England and NHS Improvement on 7 September 2018. These include plans to drive up levels of vaccination among NHS frontline staff to help protect patients and reduce the impact of flu ahead of the winter months.</p><p> </p><p>Influenza vaccination remains the best protection against flu, and should be offered to everyone over the age of 65 years, those who are at particular risk of flu, and pregnant women, at the earliest opportunity. Influenza vaccination should also be offered to all frontline healthcare workers through their occupational health teams.
