star this property answer text <p><a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/672371/E2_-_Ecological_Impact_v1.5.pdf" target="_blank">HS2 Information Paper E2</a> outlines how ecological impacts have been assessed and how they will be mitigated or compensated for during the construction of Phase One of HS2. It refers to the commitment to seek no net loss to biodiversity. Mitigation measures include the creation of habitat to maintain the populations of protected species. New areas of woodland, grassland, heathland and ponds will be created.</p><p>A route-wide monitoring strategy will be put in place. HS2 Ltd is responsible for maintaining and monitoring the new or managed habitat for a sufficient period to ensure that the nature conservation objectives are achieved. Indicative periods for the management and monitoring of habitats are set out in <a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/672401/E26_-__Indicative_Periods_Management_and_Monitoring_of_Habitats_v1.2__2_.pdf" target="_blank">HS2 Information Paper E26</a>. These include plans to monitor replacement woodland for up to 50 years.</p><p> </p><p>A similar approach is being adopted for future phases of the scheme.</p><p /><p />

star this property answer text <p>HS2 Ltd has produced a barn owl mitigation plan to manage and reduce the anticipated significant effects to barn owls caused by construction and operation of the Phase One scheme. The plan has been developed by a team of professional ecologists, including a barn owl expert, and has been informed by additional research undertaken by the British Trust for Ornithology.</p><p> </p><p>The plan assumes that 80 pairs are affected by the Phase One scheme and consists of measures to: avoid disturbance to the species during construction; reduce the collision risk of the railway to the birds; provide new artificial nesting sites at a safe distance from the railway; and monitor the new nesting sites to ensure uptake by barn owls.</p><p> </p><p>It is expected that the barn owl mitigation plan will be expanded and refined for future phases of HS2.</p> more like this

In particular, we would encourage local authorities to consider the benefits of an independent confidential reporting system (ICRS), and release of bus safety incident data, when they are forming a partnership or franchising scheme. star this property answer text <p>The Department and HS2 Ltd take very seriously any concerns raised by residents affected by the construction of HS2 and would respond to any formal representations on this issue in an appropriate way. HS2 Ltd are engaging with local residents on issues around construction and will continue to do so.</p><p> </p><p>Safeguards for residents were set out as part of the Parliamentary process for the High Speed Rail (London to West Midlands) Act 2017. The Information Paper on Ground Settlement (Information Paper C3) sets out the approach to assessing and reducing, as far as reasonably practicable, any ground settlement that could result from underground works.</p><p> </p> more like this

As the planned tunnel is approximately 40m deep at this location, there is no risk of the piles intersecting the tunnel. The significant depth also means the ground movement and differential settlement at the surface is likely to be small. A Phase 1 green field ground movement assessment and a Phase 2 ground movement has been undertaken along the route. As these buildings are listed, there will also be a phase 3 assessment, which will take account of the unique features of the building and its foundations.</p><p> </p><p>HS2 Ltd has received no representations on these issues.</p> more like this

The building will be subject to a survey in accordance with Information Paper C3 which forms part of the High Speed Rail (London to West Midlands) Act 2017.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p>(c) The ground movement at the building, using conservative volume loss assumptions, is between 1 and 7mm. In practice the experience of driving tunnels on Crossrail and HS1 in similar ground conditions demonstrates that the tunnels will be driven to a lower volume loss resulting in less movement. The tunnel boring machines specified for HS2 are high performance machines designed to minimise ground movement at source. This means there should be no need for the mitigations referred to.</p>
