The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster chaired a meeting of the Joint Ministerial Committee (EU Negotiations) on 3 September, attended by devolved administration Ministers, which included a discussion on readiness. I also chaired one of my regular meetings on readiness with devolved administration Ministers on 1 October. The people gave their instructions to Parliament in the referendum in 2016, and now we must deliver on that pledge.</p><p>The UK Government’s ambition is for an ambitious FTA, as sovereign equals, without obligation to vast alignment or harmonisation commitments. This will involve leaving the Customs Union and Single Market, in order to have full regulatory control so that we can be free to set our own laws and to strike trade deals.</p><p>The details of this partnership will be a matter for negotiation with the EU after we leave the European Union. While the chances of no deal have been reduced considerably, the government will continue to do the responsible thing and prepare for all eventualities, in case a final agreement cannot be reached. We have been clear from the start that the Devolved Administrations should be fully engaged in this process, as close cooperation between UK Government and the Devolved Administrations is essential to delivering an exit that works for all parts of the UK.
