star this property answer text We remain deeply concerned by the ongoing discrimination against Christians and other minority religious groups in Iran. We have called for the Iranian government to protect the rights of all minority groups and end the persecution of individuals on the basis of their faith. We last raised these issues with the Iranian government during our interventions at the Universal Periodic Review of Iran’s Human Rights at the UN on 31 October. more like this

star this property answer text We have serious concerns over evidence of ongoing Iranian support for a number of terrorist groups in the Middle East, including Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the military wings of Hizballah and Hamas. Such activity is in contravention of UN sanctions and undermines regional security. During our bilateral engagement with Iran over the past year, we have raised our concerns over Iran’s activities in Syria and its support for militant groups across the Middle East. We hope that the Iranian government will respond to the shared threat from ISIL by aligning their approach with the international community’s efforts to bring stability to Iraq and Syria. more like this

star this property answer text We advise British Nationals to consult the Foreign and Commonwealth (FCO) Travel Advice before travelling to Egypt, which provides the latest information on the bird flu virus in Egypt. It currently states that cases of bird flu in Egypt are mostly in rural areas, that the risk to humans from Avian Influenza is believed to be very low, that live animal markets, poultry farms and other close contact with domestic, caged or wild birds should be avoided, and that poultry and egg dishes should be thoroughly cooked. We keep our Travel Advice under continuous review based on robust and up-to-date information and analysis from our experts in-country and we will make further updates to our Travel Advice as necessary. more like this

star this property answer text The right to freedom of religion or belief, including the right to change one’s faith or beliefs, is a right which is enshrined in international human rights law. The UK government has consistently urged the Iranian government to respect the rights of all minority religious groups, in line with their international commitments. The UK last raised our concerns about freedom of religion in Iran during our inputs in Iran’s Universal Periodic Review at the UN Human Rights Council on 31 October. The UK’s non-resident Chargé d’Affaires to Iran also raised the issue of freedom of religion with Iranian human rights officials during a visit to Iran in March 2014. more like this

We do however remain extremely concerned both by Iran’s poor human rights record, and by its links to militant groups outside its borders. star this property answer text The moderate opposition groups in Syria are under pressure. The Government remains longstanding and strong supporters of these groups. We are providing non-lethal support, as well as strong political backing for the National Coalition – most recently when President Hadi al-Bahra visited London from 10th-12th November. We also plan to make a significant contribution to the US Department of Defence training programme for the Syrian groups. Taken together, our contribution is helping the moderate groups in their fight against ISIL and against President Assad’s regime forces, in very challenging conditions. more like this
